U

"Unbeatable" - Phrase coined by Hakeem in a commerical in 1986. It then became a catchphrase throughout the Houston community from the mid-to-late '80s inspiring T-shirts, posters, signs and even a song.

University of Houston - Hakeem was selected as the Southwest Conference Player of the Decade (1980) by a panel of media and coaches. He is one of eight centers to have led his team to the NCAA Final Four in three straight seasons. The Cougars were 88-16 during Olajuwon's three seasons. He had career averages of 13.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots. His No. 34 jersey was retired by UH in February 1997.


University of Louisville - Doctors of Dunk. Faced UH in the first game of the 1983 Final Four. They wanted to dunk on Hakeem. Louisville may have had the dunks, but UH got the win as Hakeem finished with 21 points and 22 rebounds in the Cougars' 94-81 victory.

Unique - Hakeem is the only player in NBA history to win the Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and the NBA Finals MVP in the same season (1993-94). He also became the only player in the history of the league to record 200 or more blocked shots and steals in the same season (1988-89). Unprecedented streak of 11 consecutive seasons totaling 200 blocks and 100 steals.

Victory - Since Hakeem began his career with the Rockets in 1984, Houston has totaled 783 victories against only 577 losses, for a winning percentage of .576.

Weinberg, Larry - The Portland Trail Blazers owner who called tails before NBA commisssioner David Stern's coin flip that decided which team would get the No. 1 pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. The coin came up heads allowing the Rockets to select Hakeem Olajuwon with the first pick. The Trail Blazers drafted Sam Bowie.

X

XXL - Hakeem's jersey size. He wanted jersey No. 33 at UH but it was already taken, so he chose the next highest number.

Y

Yommy Basket - A legend in Nigerian basketball when Hakeem first started to play. His real name was Yommy Sangodeyi but his fans in his native Nigeria called him Yommy Basket. When he took his jump shot everyone in the stands would shout "Yommy" and then "Basket" after his shot swished through the net. He eventually attended Sam Houston State and was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1984 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets.

Zero - The number of games won by the Orlando Magic in the 1995 NBA Finals, thanks to Hakeem Olajuwon. Hakeem scored 131 points in the series, the most ever for a four-game series in NBA Finals history.
