Hitting The Highway In LA

May 27, 2011

Recommending Some Tunes

May 18, 2011

@RaptorspaceKat I’m a musicaholic. When you don’t have the words, there are lyrics that say it for you. #therapy #mixtape

Music has been my boyfriend since I’ve hit the west coast. When the NBA season ends I tend to crawl back into some favourite genres that I don’t get to soak in enough during the season. The in game vibe at Raptors games has a very urban influence and tracks from Drake, Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna fill the arena right from tip off to the final buzzer. I get caught up in the top 40 scene because the Dance Pak uses music for our routines that cater to the likes of the fans; the beat of the moment, the song playing in the car pushing up Yonge Street. Therefore I’m humming these beats while running choreography on my way to the TV studio or during my gym session. The Dance Pak statement has a jazz funk influence, very much like the styles you see in videos from Beyonce and the Pussycat Dolls. But now that the season is finished I’ve gone back to some of my roots; old school rock, country, doo wop just to name a few. I’ve been tweeting a lot of lyrics and have been asked on twitter what has been shuffling on my ipod.

Here is a list off my recently played songs, outside of the Raptors groove, that have been accompanying me in the Cali sunshine:

Lupe Fiasco - Til I Get There
Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes
The Black Keys - Girl is on my Mind
Bruno Mars - Somewhere in Brooklyn
Vanaprasta - Self Indulgent Feeling
Dave Matthews Band - Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd
Adele - Rolling in the Deep
Shad - Rose Garden
Chris Cornell - Finally Forever
Classifed - All About You
Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby Mcgee
Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johannson - Relator
Poison - Fallen Angel
Jason Mraz - Butterfly
Serena Ryder - It Doesn’t Matter Anymore
Zac Brown Band - Let It Go
Jessie J - Do it like a Dude
Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights - Gypsy Woman
Journey - Faithfully
Bobby Freeman - Do You Wanna Dance
Kings of Leon - Manhattan
The Kinks - All Day and All Night
Ladies of the Canyon - Poet
Jazmine Sullivan - Luv Back
The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight

As a dancer the beat locks me in. As the everyday girl soaking in the world, it’s the lyrics.

Taking It Down A Notch

May 16, 2011

It’s nice to rattle up your pace of life every once in a while. With the set walls of an NBA season ranging roughly from October through April it has been a steady ‘all in’ ride since last August when Dance Pak rehearsals commenced. I love every minute of a “go, go, go” lifestyle so I struggle to drop the word ‘relaxation’ into my mind somewhere on the 24/7 clock. But it is a necessity. I’ve learned that the hard way with unnecessary sick bugs and injuries. So here I am, changing up pace on the west coast, doing me and conquering some R&R .

Amberley is a former Cali girl, having lived here for a few years, succeeding at the insanely competitive dance scene here in LA. I’ve always admired her never-ending drive. I believe that a distinct personality balanced with focus, confidence, humbleness and the mind frame that there is always someone better than you so never stop working on your craft holds the edge to success. It is absolutely a tough world, both mentally and physically. I think a lot of performers do the doctor/dancer, lawyer/actor, banker/singer debate at the beginning of their trek to be what they dreamed of as a child. I did. And I don’t regret one moment of pushing for my passion. I can’t say that I would be miserable if I didn’t because that road is unfamiliar but I do know what challenges me to the point of happiness. I am going to continue to roll with that.

With the goal of taking it down a notch in mind and my former local travel buddy Amberley, we started the trip with pedicures and massages in Hollywood and soaked up some sun by the pool at the W hotel. A book is always in hand but my confession is that I have yet to open it. Getting into a relaxing groove is coming slowly. I need to go from a Drake-Up All Night to a Bruno Mars-The Lazy Song and I’m sitting somewhere around a Lupe Fiasco-Til I Get There. I’ll get there.

I want to thank some of my followers on twitter for getting my mind into this new creative project, my Cali blog. They said it would be interesting to see another side of Kat. Throw me some questions if you have any, I'm always down for answering them. Well my Dance Pak costumes are tucked away for the off season so here we go...
