Raptors Sign Brunson and Williams

(August 13, 2003) -- The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have signed free-agent guard Rick Brunson and forward George Williams. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“Rick will provide us with solid defensive play and insurance in our backcourt,” said Senior Vice-President and General Manager Glen Grunwald.

Brunson, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, is a six-year NBA veteran who has seen action in 160 regular-season games, averaging 2.5 points and 1.8 assists. He has also appeared in 16 postseason contests.

Brunson has played with Portland, New York, Boston and Chicago. He averaged a career-best 4.3 points in his rookie season, 1997-98, with the Trail Blazers.

“George played well for us on our summer league team and we look forward to him joining us at training camp,” added Grunwald. Williams, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds, averaged 7.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in six outings for the Raptors’ recent entry in the Los Angeles Pro Summer League. He had a high of 14 points and five rebounds in a victory over Seattle.

Williams spent last season with the Roanoke Dazzle of the NBDL where he averaged 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in 48 games. A product of the University of Houston, Williams averaged 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds in three seasons.
