Community MVP

The Raptors have teamed up with ESQ to recognize one player or coach a month for his outstanding work in the community and commitment to being a positive representative of the team off the court.

Monthly winners are presented their award and a Movado watch during a Raptors home game.
2010-11 Community MVPs
MARCH
DeMar DeRozan, the face of Raptors community programming, DeMar was certainly an MVP throughout March. In addition to being the Raptors face of MLSE’s Team Up Foundation and athlete ambassador for DeMar’s Slam Dunk Book Club, in March DeMar also attended a Shape Up school visit, a Team Up Foundation court launch and continued with his ticket program that will bring in almost 200 at-risk youth to a Raptors game this season. Thank you for your constant commitment to the community DeMar.


FEBRUARY
Sonny Weems, always committed to giving back to the community, Sonny was exceptional in February. In addition to five other appearances made on behalf of the Raptors, Sonny also participated in a community basketball clinic for 50 youth and continued with his ticket program that will bring in close to 150 at-risk youth to a Raptors game this season. Thank you for your contributions to the community Sonny and congratulations.


JANUARY
Leandro Barbosa, new to the team this year, Leandro really showed us his passion to give back in January including participating in a community basketball clinic for 50 youth and committing to a ticket program that will bring in over 200 Toronto/Brasilian youth to a Raptors game this season. From the moment he walked onto this team Leandro has been an integral part of the Raptors community endeavours. Thank you Leandro.


DECEMBER
Jose Calderon, a staple in Raptors community programming each year, Jose has gone over and above this season. Throughout December he participated in a basketball development clinic, committed to a ticket program that will bring in over 100 Toronto/Spanish youth to a Raptors game, visited children at SickKids hospital and confirmed the production of a Calderon t-shirt with sales benefitting Right To Play. Thank you for always making the effort to give back to the Toronto community Jose.


NOVEMBER
Julian Wright, new to the team this year, is an exemplary example of how a professional athlete can give back to the community in which they play. Throughout November he participated in a school visit with local students, a meet and greet with sick kids from Camp Trillium and committed to a ticket program. Thanks to Julian’s ticket program, over 300 children and youth, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, will attend to a Raptors basketball game this season. Thank you for your contributions to the community Julian and congratulations.


OCTOBER
Ed Davis has taken on a considerable amount of off-court responsibility in his new home. As a rookie and Toronto’s first draft pick, Ed has shown unwavering support for the team’s community endeavors, including a SickKids visit and a basketball clinic with kids from the Boys and Girls Club. Despite an injury sustained in September, Ed has been an exemplary model of the Raptors core values by showing a willingness and focus to stay involved in team events engaging fans in our community. Thanks to Ed’s involvement, many children have experienced Raptors basketball who wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity.

2009-10 Community MVPs
JANUARY
DeMar DeRozan's commitment to his new "home" has been incredible throughout his first year in Toronto. In addition to lending his time to numerous community initiatives, in January our rookie committed to being the ambassador of DeMar's Slam Dunk Book Club - a group dedicated to promoting reading and leadership among some of Toronto's at-risk youth. Thanks to DeMar's ticket program over 165 children and youth will get the chance to attend a Raptors home game this season.


DECEMBER
Jay Triano is committed to Raptors community initiatives and acting as a positive influence to many of Toronto's coaches, children and youth.

Throughout December Jay proudly represented the Raptors in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics torch relay and generously donated his time to other community events such as the Raptors Clinic Series. Jay's work in the community is also evident through his ticket program where he donates tickets to Toronto coaches who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to attend a Raptors game.


NOVEMBER
Jose Calderon continues to be a positive influence in the community through both team and personal initiatives. This season he renewed his commitment to Right To Play - an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills and foster peace for communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world.

This season Jose will donate both time and money to Right To Play as one of their most committed athlete ambassadors.
