It's tough to put the burden of a this star-crossed franchise on a fragile, 20-year-old point guard, but Shaun Livingston just may be the 20 year old that can handle it. He has only played 30 career games, but his court vision and feel for the game have already drawn comparisons to some of the best point guards of all-time. He has only played 30 games for a reason, however. He proved to be fragile in his first season. Livingston suffered two serious injuries last season and he needs to become stronger and durable to withstand the grind of the NBA. He showed enough in limited action to start the last 15 games of the season and impress one of the best point guards in the league though.

"I think with his size, he has a huge advantage, and he has a great feel for the game" said reigning MVP Steve Nash. "I'll be interested to see what he does with it."

Livingston could be the reason that, despite the departure of Bobby Simmons, the Clippers improve on their 37-45 record from last season.

The Clippers replaced Simmons with Cuttino Mobley, who will give them more of a long-distance threat and will allow Corey Maggette to move back to small forward. Maggette is one of the most athletic players in the league and could certainly benefit from having Livingston around for a full season, but he needs be more fundamentally sound in order to realize his potential. The always steady Elton Brand anchors the front line. Brand had another solid season in '04-05, averaging 20.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per contest, while missing just one game. Brand may seem like he's been around for a while, but he is still just 26 years old. His best basketball should be ahead of him.

The other key components of the Clippers' frontline are even younger. Both Chris Wilcox and Chris Kaman are just 23 and each has nice potential. Kaman needs to get tougher though and Wilcox needs to be more consistent and improve defensively in order to stay out of Mike Dunleavy's doghouse.

In order to give full reins to Livingston, the Clippers shipped out Marko Jaric and got Sam Cassell in return. Cassell should give them some instant offense off the bench and could provide some veteran leadership if he's willing to accept his role. With the No. 12 pick in the draft, the Clippers selected talented but inexperienced Yaroslav Korolev from Russia. Somewhat surprisingly (he is only 18 and has played mainly against junior competition) , Korolev signed and will be with the team, but don't expect him to contribute much this season.

Veteran Leadership

Cassell
Cassell might not have as big a role on the floor as he is used to, but he could have a significant impact in the locker room. His behavior was a problem in Minnesota last season and it could certainly be an issue in Los Angeles. If Cassell buys in to what Dunleavy is selling though, he could be a nice weapon off the bench or even playing alongside Shaun Livingston. He could also teach Livingston a lesson or two about how to succeed in the league.

27
THE STAT
The Clippers were 27-14 at the Staples Center last season. The 27 home victories were the most for the franchise since the 1992-93 season.
X&O STRENGTH

Mobley
The team’s offensive motto may be, shoot until you miss, shoot until you make it. That's what you will see with recent additions Sam Cassell and Cuttino Mobley... The Clippers have some interior players that can do some things. Elton Brand is a very sound player (pencil him in for 20 and 10 every night) and could be used with Sam in pick and rolls, which Sam will excel in. Chris Kaman and Chris Wilcox have got to step up... With the arrival of Cassell, what does this do to last year’s lottery pick Shaun Livingston? One scenario is to play them both on the floor at the same time... I think Mike Dunleavy will let Sam go in the open floor, but Mike likes half court sets, running screens, pick and rolls and likes the ball inside. The Cassell and Mobley combination can be a nice combination.

X&O WEAKNESS
Sam and Mobley are very weak defensively and you can beat them off the dribble. Are there any shot-blockers on this team? Chris Wilcox can get into it. I think their defense is limited. When it comes to inside play, Sam won’t throw it in unless something good can happen. He won’t throw it in there like he did with Kevin Garnett in Minnesota. He’ll use them but won’t be confident in them unless they do something.

HEAD COACH PHILOSOPHY
I have found Mike Dunleavy to be more of a set guy, a control guy, let’s them go out once in a while. With Sam there, and Mobley running down one side and Livingston or Corey Maggette running down the other side, there could be an opening up of this game a la Phoenix. It certainly has signs of a push-push game. They can be a playoff contender . -- Don Casey (courtesy of the National Basketball Coaches Association)

Cuttino Mobley: Will likely slip below the radar on draft day.
Sam Cassell: Will get limited minutes behind Livingston.

Korolev
"Livingston is exceptional. He sees the court as well as anybody in the game has ever seen the court. I don't care if it's Magic or Stockton or anybody. He sees the court and has a feel for where everybody is as well as anybody I've ever seen. He's just fragile. He had two major injuries last year that really hurt. He needs to improve his shooting. He's probably their best defender... It will be interesting to see what Sam Cassell does. Sam wants to start, and he can be a problem if he doesn't like the way things are going. Livingston is their franchise and their future, so you're not going to sacrifice that for some aging veteran who's going to pout. They may be able to play Sam and Shaun together... Corey Maggette is one of the most athletic guys in the league. Unfortunately, he doesn't always utilize it. He has the potential to be one of the better players in the league, but he has to improve some things fundamentally. His outside shooting and ball handling have to be more consistent, and he's got to become a better passer. He relies solely on his athletic ability. That only takes you so far."
