Boston Celtics

The Celtics got even younger this summer by letting two of their key veterans head south to Miami and by using their top draft pick on high-school phenom Gerald Green. While the future is very bright for Boston, the present isn’t so bad either. They’re a talented team and they can certainly make their fifth straight playoff appearance if Doc Rivers can keep everyone in line and playing together. Veterans Paul Pierce, Ricky Davis and Raef LaFrentz will be counted on to provide leadership and consistent play while Rivers experiments with different lineups and combinations.

Much will be made about Pierce’s happiness in Boston this season and his patience will likely be tested, but he is still one of the best players in the game and has been the cornerstone of their recent success, including last year’s Atlantic Division title.

Pierce, LaFrentz and Al Jefferson are certain starters, but the rest of the rotation is up for grabs. Tony Allen may have been ready to step into the starting backcourt, but knee surgery will keep him out of camp and maybe cause him to miss the start of the season. Rivers would probably like to keep Ricky Davis as the sixth man, so he may go with Brian Scalabrine at the small forward spot, with Paul Pierce moving to shooting guard until Allen is healthy and ready. Scalabrine will be a solid role player and a guy who can knock down the jumper when Pierce draws an extra defender. Scalabrine could have a tough time on the other end of the floor though, when he is matched up with quicker, more athletic swing men.

Delonte West will likely inherit the starting point guard spot, but he could be challenged by Dan Dickau, or even Marcus Banks. Kendrick Perkins could unseat Mark Blount as the first big man off the bench, but it is clear that frontline depth is an issue in Boston and much is riding on the development of Jefferson. Justin Reed is another youngster that could be an X-factor off the bench. Even if he doesn’t get much playing time in his rookie year, you will likely see Gerald Green in your weekly highlights fairly often.

Expanded Role For Big Al

Jefferson
If the Celtics stay competitive this season, it will be because of the development of Al Jefferson. In his first year out of high school, Jefferson was expectedly inconsistent last season, but he did average 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in less than 15 minutes per game, while shooting .528 from the field.

Jefferson will be asked to do much more this year as a starter. The Celtics need him to give them a presence down low to compliment Pierce. Jefferson has the talent and instincts, but is very short on experience. He will be tested in an improved Atlantic Division, but his progression could be what keeps Paul Pierce happy among all the kids in green.

5
THE STAT
Paul Pierce has averaged at least 21.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game for five straight seasons, while missing a total of five games over that time period.
X&O STRENGTH

Pierce
They’ve really gone young, and they have a great player in Paul Pierce. They will set screens for Pierce or isolate him on either side of the floor. He’s more effective on the left wing. He has the ability to create his own shot or get fouled. He likes to take it to the hoop but he’s also a very capable outside shooter. I think Paul Pierce is one of the top 10 offensive players in the NBA.

X&O WEAKNESS
Their best big man scorer LaFrentz and he’s more of an outside shooter. There’s no inside threat from a big man that can create a double-team to make it easier for his teammates... I don’t see any tremendous additions this year. The one addition I like is Brian Scalabrine. He’s the type of player that can come off the bench and help you win some games.

HEAD COACH PHILOSOPHY
I think Doc likes to run the basketball. They have some young players that have some good legs.

Al Jefferson: A year under his belt and more playing time should make Jefferson the 2nd best fantasy player on the Celtics.
Tony Allen: Will fight for minutes even if he starts.
"I think there’s going to be frustration for Pierce, because he’s used to winning and he’s not overtly a team guy. He may say some of the right things but he’s more about him. If they have success early, then he’ll be on board, but if they struggle, he’ll either ask to be traded or be creating problems... There are a lot of growing pains with kids coming out of high school. The key there is Doc and handling people, and Doc has been good with people both in Orlando and in Boston. As a general rule (and there are exceptions), it takes point guards and big men three years to reach their potential... On the strength of Doc alone, I think they’re gonna be OK. I don’t think they’re going to be an upper-tier team in the East, but they could slide into the playoffs at 7 or 8."
