At the time, it seemed like a good idea. You're up two points with two seconds remaining. You can't quite get both hands on the ball, so knock it as far away from the hoop as you can.
That's exactly what Sacramento's Vlade Divac did in Game 4 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals against the L.A. Lakers. A heady, veteran play, right? Well, Divac didn't count on Robert Horry waiting behind the three-point line. Divac's batted ball bounded toward him, Horry caught and shot in one fluid motion. The three-pointer was pure. Instead of going to Sacramento down 3-1, the Lakers tied the series at 2-2. L.A. would go on to win the series and their third consecutive NBA title. Horry's shot saved the Lakers' season and preserved the dynasty for another year.
