COLLEGE
The fourth Blue Devil selected in the first 14 picks of the 1999 NBA Draft, William Avery joined the Minnesota Timberwolves following a stellar sophomore season at Duke. Avery was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press in 1999, after he helped lead Duke to the 1999 NCAA Championship game. A deadly sharpshooter, Avery was accurate at both the foul line (.810) and from three-point range (.411), en route to averaging 14.9 ppg. The 6-2 guard led the Blue Devils in assists (5.0), ranking fourth in the ACC, and was second on his team in steals (57). Avery excelled in postseason play, averaging 19.3 ppg in the ACC Tournament and 14.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 2.8 apg in the NCAA Tournament. He drained a school-record eight three-pointers vs. Florida on Dec. 9, 199, tallying 76 for the season (seventh highest in a season among Duke players).
