Head-to-Head Comparisons

BACKGROUND

After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls and not even offered a contract, Travis Knight signed with the Los Angeles Lakers and had a promising rookie season. He signed with the Boston Celtics as a free agent but played only one season before he was reacquired by the Lakers, who used him at both center and power forward in 1998-99. Knight finished second on the Connecticut career blocked shot list with 179 and ninth on the field goal shooting percentage list with .518. He led the team in rebounding his final two seasons (8.2 rpg in 1994-95 and 9.3 rpg in 1995-96). Knight recorded 18 career double-doubles and scored in double figures in 33 games during his career. As a senior, Knight was named to the Big East Conference All-Tournament team after helping lead UConn to the conference tournament title. The Chicago Bulls selected Knight with the 29th pick on the first round of the 1996 NBA Draft, but rather than be locked into a three-year guaranteed contract, the Bulls elected to renounce his rights on July 12, 1996. The Lakers signed him as a free agent on July 31 and he turned out to be a valuable backup, seeing action in 71 games as a rookie and starting 14 times while center Shaquille O'Neal was injured. Knight sufficiently impressed new Boston coach Rick Pitino that the Celtics signed him to a multi-year contract on July 7, 1997, hopeful that he would be their center of the future. While he did set career-highs in games and minutes played, scoring and rebounding in his first season with the Celtics, he did not step up and become the front-line center the team had been seeking, and on January 21, 1999 he was dealt back to the Lakes for Tony Battie. He played in 37 games for the Lakers in 1998-99, including 23 starts, and averaged 4.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

He ranked third on the Lakers in rebounding, shotblocking and field goal percentage (.509). Knight had five double-doubles, including 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds (11 offensive) in a 114-97 win over Golden State on Jan. 24, 18 points and 13 rebounds in a 127-121 loss to New York on Feb. 23 and 18 points and 14 rebounds in a 109-84 rout at New Jersey on March 24.
