The fourth-leading scorer in UCLA history behind Don MacLean, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Reggie Miller, Toby Bailey was selected on the second round of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers and promptly dealt to the Phoenix Suns for cash and a future second-round pick. He played in 27 games for the Suns as a rookie, making 10 starts, but missed much of the season due to tendinitis in his right knee.
The 6-5 guard scored 1,846 points in his UCLA career, averaging 14.3 ppg in 129 games, and is the only Bruin to surpass 1,600 points and 400 assists. He is first in career three-pointers attempted (501), second in threes made (171) and sixth in assists (458). He sparked UCLA's drive to the 1995 NCAA title with a pair of 26-point tournament efforts as a freshman, then made the All-Pac-10 Team three years in a row. He scored in double figures in 31 of 33 games as a senior, averaging a career-high 17.9 ppg, including a team-high 18.7 ppg in the NCAA Tournament.
The 45th player selected in the 1998 NBA Draft, Bailey averaged 2.9 points in 9.2 minutes per game as a rookie in his 27 appearances. He had two stints on the injured list because of patellar tendinitis in his right knee.
