- He and wife Millie have two sons, Brayden and Davis
- Donated $2.5 million to Michigan State to build the Clara Bell Smith Student-Activity Center in honor of his late mother
- Has also donated over $600,000 to his high school - Pershing High School in Detroit - for a scholarship program for Pershing students attending Michigan State
- Was inducted into MSU's Athletics Hall of Fame in September of 2001, in addition this summer, Pershing High School held a Steve Smith day and re-named its gym after him
- A member of the Board of Directors for "Reading is Fundamental"
- Is active in the Boys and Girls Club
- Loves Sanford and Son, has every episode on tape
- Enjoys playing chess and pool, is also a big bowler
- Plans on getting into real estate after his playing days are over
- Lists The Shawshank Redemption as his favorite movie and Sade as his favorite artist
