BACKGROUND

After playing for five CBA teams as well as 40 games for the San Antonio Spurs in 1993-94, Sam Mack was a solid contributor for the Houston Rockets in 1995-96, playing in 31 games and making 20 starts after signing with the club in February. He was with the team for all of 1996-97, but foot injuries limited his playing time and cost him a spot on the playoff roster. Obtained by Vancouver for a second-round draft choice prior to the start of the 1997-98 season, he went on to average 10.8 ppg for the Grizzlies, matching his career high. He was reacquired by the Rockets midway through the 1998-99 season and averaged 10.7 points in 44 games for the two teams. He played in 23 games for Golden State in 1999-2000. Mack began his college career at Iowa State, averaging 11.8 points for the Cyclones, then attended Tyler Junior College and averaged 24.6 ppg while shooting .553 from the field. He finished his college career at the University of Houston, where he averaged 17.5 points in 31 games 1991-92. The 6-7 guard appeared in 40 games for the San Antonio Spurs in 1992-93, averaging 3.6 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. He spent the next two seasons in the CBA, playing for five different teams: Rapid City, Yakima, Fort Wayne, Oklahoma City and Rockford. He averaged over 14 points per game in the CBA and appeared in the playoff twice, averaging 20.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in six playoff games. He began 1995-96 with the Rockford Lightning of the CBA and was averaging 20.7 points and 4.3 rebounds when he signed the first of two 10-day contracts with the Houston Rockets on February 12, 1996. He was signed for the remainder of the season on March 3. Filling in for the injured Clyde Drexler, he averaged 10.8 points and 3.2 rebounds and shot 40 percent from three-point range. Mack played 52 games for Houston in 1996-97, making 10 starts, but was on the injured list twice, with injuries to each foot. He averaged 5.6 ppg but his shooting dipped to .401 from the field and .331 from three-point range. He was squeezed out of a roster spot with Houston in the 1997-98 preseason and dealt to Vancouver for a second-round draft choice on October 28, just before the start of the regular season. He went on the play in 57 games for the Grizzlies and matched his career high by averaging 10.8 ppg, but he missed the final 14 games of the season due to a broken foot. He played in 19 games, including 15 starts, for Vancouver before he was traded back to Houston on March 11, 1999 in exchange for Rodrick Rhodes. He then appeared in 25 games, all off the bench, for the Rockets, and finished the season with an average of 9.2 points per game. He played in 23 games for Golden State in 1999-2000, signing on Jan. 6, 2000 and being waived on March 20. He averaged 5.0 points per game and had 21 three-pointers in his 23 outings.

1996-1997 REGULAR SEASON
Mack had a disappointing season, suffering injuries to both feet that cost him playing time and limited his effectiveness. He missed 11 games in November and December because of a sprained left foot, then missed 21 games, including the final 16 games of the season, because of a bruised right foot. As a result, he was not included on Houston's playoff roster. After scoring in double figures only once as of Jan. 16, Mack posted 10+ points 11 times in his next 24 games before his season was cut short. Overall he averaged 5.6 ppg in 52 appearances, including 10 starts, with a season-high 20 points in a 111-104 win over New Jersey on Jan. 23. He had a career-high nine rebounds in that same game. Mack's shooting suffered, undoubtedly affected by his foot injuries. A .400 shooter from three-point range the year before, he managed just .331 from behind the arc and .401 overall.

1995-1996 REGULAR SEASON
Mack got his big chance to show what he could do at the NBA level due to an injury to Clyde Drexler, and came through by averaging 10.8 points and 3.2 rebounds after signing with the Houston Rockets on February 12. He played in 31 games and made 20 starts, his first career NBA start coming on Feb. 27 against Toronto. He scored in double figures 13 times, including four games of 20 points or more. He erupted for a career-high 38 points against Golden State on April 2, and also had games of 26 points vs. Phoenix on April 21 and 25 points at Seattle on April 3. He shot 54-for-135 from three-point range, a solid .400 mark. Mack appeared briefly in six of Houston's eight playoff games, averaging 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Mack began the year in the CBA playing for the Rockford Lightning, for whom he averaged 20.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in 38 contests. He ranked fourth in the CBA in scoring at the time of his call-up.
