BACKGROUND

Randy Brown's hustle, defense, and playmaking ability led him to stardom at New Mexico State and a career in the NBA. After four years with the Sacramento Kings he returned to his hometown of Chicago as a veteran free agent and won championship rings with the Bulls in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He led the Bulls in assists in the 1999-2000 season. The Kings also brought in Spud Webb that season, handing Brown the role of backup playmaker and defensive specialist. At 6-3, Brown provided a valuable contrast to the 5-7 Webb. Despite limited playing time, Brown has had some notable NBA moments. On February 11, 1992, he set a franchise record with six steals in a single quarter. In his four seasons at Sacramento, Brown had combined averages of 5.2 points, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. In 1995-96 Brown appeared in 68 games as a reserve guard for the Bulls, primarily when Coach Phil Jackson wanted to turn up the defensive pressure a notch. He filled the same role the next two seasons, appearing in 72 and 71 games and helping the Bulls win two more titles. Following Michael Jordan's retirement, he was a starter for much of the 1998-99 season and posted career-highs in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and minutes played. Injuries limited him to 59 games, all but four as a starter, in 1999-2000, when he led the Bulls in assists. Brown signed as a free agent with Boston in the summer of 2001, but was traded to Phoenix along with Joe Johnson, Milt Palacio and a future first round pick for Rodney Rogers and Tony Delk.
