After strong showings at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and the Nike Desert Classic, Paul Grant was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 1997 NBA Draft, but he spent the entire 1997-98 season on the injured list.
After sitting out a year after transferring to Wisconsin from Boston College, Grant was named honorable mention All-Big Ten following a senior year in which he led the Badgers in scoring (12.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.494) and blocked shots (1.2 bpg). At Boston College, Grant started 18 games as a freshman but a total of just 16 games over the next two seasons.
Grant was placed on the injured list prior to the start of his rookie season with a right midfoot sprain. He later underwent surgery to remove bone spurs and chips from both ankles.
