    Anderson lost his shooting touch in 1996-97 and his scoring average dropped to 12.0 ppg, his lowest since he was a rookie in 1989-90. ... Anderson shot a career-low .397 from the field and a miserable .404 from the foul line. Even his three-point touch deserted him as he dipped to .353--not terrible, but nothing like his peak of .431 two years earlier. ... Anderson played in 63 games, all but two as a starter, missing 19 due to wrist and leg injuries. Besides ranking fifth on the team in scoring, he also averaged 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and a team-high 1.90 steals per game. The latter would have ranked 13th in the NBA but he did not have enough steals to qualify for the leader list. ... He scored 20+ points 10 times, including a season-high 28 points that included eight three-pointers in a 128-110 loss at Charlotte on Feb. 17. He had a season-high 14 rebounds in a 78-67 loss at Atlanta on Jan. 16. ...     1995-1996:
    Anderson was a reliable offensive weapon for the Magic, scoring in double figures in 57 of the 77 games he played and averaging 14.7 points in 35.3 minutes per game. In addition to being the team's fourth leading scorer, he also ranked third in rebounding at 5.4 per game; third in assists at 3.6 per game; second in steals at 1.57 per game; and fourth in blocked shots at 0.60 per game. During Orlando's 12 playoff games, his averages were 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game. ... Although he shot only .442 from the field, he was a definite threat from three-point range, where he posted a .391 mark on 168-for-430. He ranked second on the team in both three-pointers made and attempted. ... Anderson scored 20 or more points 17 times, reaching a season-high 34 at Minnesota on Nov. 24. Three nights later against Detroit, he sank seven three-pointers, including a team record-tying five in the first quarter, in a 31-point performance. He also had 33 points against San Antonio on Feb. 4, 30 points at New York on Feb. 1 and 29 points, including a team record-tying nine three-pointers, at Utah on Jan. 19. He posted four double-doubles during the season, including 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds against New Jersey on Nov. 8. ... He missed one game in February and three games in March with a left shoulder contusion, and one game in January with a sprained right big toe. Otherwise he started all of the 77 games in which he played.

    1994-1995:
    Anderson played an integral role in the Orlando Magic's drive to the NBA Finals in 1994-95. He started 76 games and finished first on the team in three-pointers made (179), third in scoring (15.8 ppg), third in assists (4.1 apg), fourth in minutes (34.1 per game), and tied for fourth in rebounding (4.4 rpg). He shot .476 from the field and .704 from the line, and his .415 mark from three-point range ranked 14th in the NBA. ... Anderson's highlights included a season-high 35 points on December 26 against the Washington Bullets and 27 points on February 24 against the Boston Celtics. On December 3 he surpassed Scott Skiles for the franchise lead in games played at 385. ... The Magic finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference at 57-25 and survived a tough playoff run by defeating Boston, the Chicago Bulls, and the Indiana Pacers to emerge as Eastern Conference champions. Anderson struggled in the NBA Finals against the Houston Rockets, however. He missed four free throws in the final seconds of Game 1, allowing Houston to force overtime and then prevail in the extra period. He averaged 12.3 points for the series, shooting .360 from the field, .323 from three-point distance, and .300 from the line. The Rockets swept the series in four games. Overall, Anderson averaged 14.7 points in the playoffs while defending such formidable opponents as Dee Brown, Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller, and Clyde Drexler in successive rounds. His containment of Jordan and Miller was crucial to the Magic's playoff success.

    1993-1994:
    With the arrival of rookie sensation Anfernee Hardaway, Anderson assumed a reduced scoring burden for the Orlando Magic this season. The former University of Illinois star scored 15.8 points per game, down from 19.9 in each of his previous two campaigns. However, Anderson's shooting percentage (.478) was his best since his rookie year (.494), as his field-goal attempts (1,054) dropped by nearly 300. He also contributed 5.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. ... The Magic reached the playoffs for the first time in their five-year history after recording a 50-32 regular-season record, fourth best in the Eastern Conference. However, Orlando dropped its opening-round series to the Indiana Pacers in three straight games. As in the:, Anderson was the team's third-leading scorer in the playoffs, averaging 14.3 points.

    1992-1993:
    Anderson did it all for the Magic in his fourth NBA season. Thanks to his efforts (and those of a rookie named Shaquille O'Neal), Orlando made the NBA's most dramatic turnaround, improving by 20 games to a 41-41 record by season's end. ... Anderson ranked second to O'Neal in both scoring (19.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg) while leading the team in steals (1.62 per game). His 88 three-pointers were second on the team to Dennis Scott's 108, and his 3.4 assists per game ranked second behind point guard Scott Skiles's 9.4. ... Starting 76 of the 79 games he played in, Anderson became the Magic's all-time leading scorer with 4,691 career points. He had a career-high and then team-record 50 points against the Nets at New Jersey on April 23, and he dished for 11 assists on February 23 versus the Portland Trail Blazers.

    1991-1992:
    Anderson played in only 60 games in 1991-92, missing 21 straight in February and March with a fractured right eye socket. When healthy, he was dazzling, tying Dennis Scott for the team scoring lead (19.9 ppg), although Scott played in only 18 games. ... Anderson added 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 36.7 minutes per game. He recorded his first career triple-double with 32 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in a game against the Dallas Mavericks on January 24. He also participated in the Slam-Dunk Championship at the NBA All-Star Weekend, finishing third behind Cedric Ceballos and Larry Johnson. ... Orlando occupied the Atlantic Division cellar with a 21-61 record, but the Magic's fortunes would change rapidly with the selection of Shaquille O'Neal in the 1992 NBA Draft.

    1990-1991:
    Anderson began to assert himself in his second season, averaging 14.1 points and 5.5 rebounds in 70 games. He missed 12 games because of injury, including 9 straight after a right hamstring pull. ... Anderson finished third on the Magic in total rebounds (386) behind Greg Kite and Otis Smith. He grabbed a career-high 14 boards against the Houston Rockets on March 30. ... Orlando played in the Midwest Division in 1990-91, and behind rookie Dennis Scott the Magic finished fourth with a surprising 31-51 record.

    1989-1990:
    The Magic saw Anderson as a building block for the future, but Anderson soon proved he could contribute immediately. He averaged 11.5 points as a rookie, the highest scoring average for a No. 11 pick since Kiki Vandeweghe averaged 11.5 in 1980-81. Playing in 81 games, Anderson ranked second on the Magic in field-goal percentage (.494) and third in total points (931), steals (69), and blocks (34). ... As expected, the expansion Magic labored through a tough season. Orlando finished at 18-64 and in last place in the Central Division.

    COLLEGE:
    A solidly built swingman, Anderson honed his game in Chicago. As a high school senior, he was named "Mr. Basketball" in Illinois after leading his team to the city championship and a No. 1 national ranking in USA Today. Upon his graduation, Anderson, who wears uniform No. 25 in memory of Ben Wilson, a high school friend and teammate who was killed in a shooting, continued his exploits at the University of Illinois. After sitting out his freshman year, he turned in two outstanding seasons, teaming with future NBA players Kendall Gill and Marcus Liberty. As a junior, Anderson averaged 18.0 points and 7.9 rebounds to help lead the Illini to a 31-5 record and a berth in the 1989 NCAA Final Four. Following that season he declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft.
