BACKGROUND

After two strong seasons at Texas Tech, Mark Davis appeared in 57 games as a rookie with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995-96 but really came into his own with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996-97, averaging 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 75 games. He dropped off to 4.0 ppg and 2.2 rpg in 71 games in his third pro season, then played only four games for Miami in 1998-99 before being waived and finishing the year in the CBA. He appeared in 23 games for Golden State in 1999-2000 after starting the year in the CBA. Davis was the first player in Texas Tech history to register 200 or more rebounds and 100 or more assists in the same season, doing it twice. During his final season Davis finished among the top 10 in the Southwest Conference in scoring (17.3 ppg), rebounding (8.5 rpg), blocked shots, steals, assists (4.7 apg) and field goal percentage (.499). Those numbers earned him All-SWC and SWC All-Defensive Team honors. He played two seasons at Howard College before coming to Tech, averaging 21.0 ppg and 8.3 rpg in his second year of junior college ball. Drafted in the second round by Minnesota, Davis appeared in 57 games as a rookie, averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per outing. He signed with the Sixers as a free agent on September 11, 1996 and proved to be a valuable addition. He played in 75 games and made 17 starts, including the final 13 games of the season, and came on strong late in the year. He scored in double figures in his last eight games and 13 of his final 15. With the emergence of rookie Tim Thomas, especially in the second half of the season, Davis saw less action and was less productive in 1997-98. His points, rebounds and minutes per game all were about half that of the previous season. He averaged 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game in four games for the Miami Heat before being waived on Feb. 19, 1999. He later played three games for the La Crosse Bobcats of the CBA. He began the 1999-2000 season with La Crosse as well, playing well enough to be signed by the Warriors to the first of consecutive 10-day contracts on Jan. 19 and then for the remainder of the season on March 22. He averaged 6.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in 23 appearances with the Warriors.

1996-1997 REGULAR SEASON
Davis was a valuable contributor for the 76ers, who primarily used him off the bench for most of the season before adding him to the starting lineup for the final 13 games. In that late stretch he averaged 14.0 points and 6.8 rebounds to raise his season stats to 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 22.7 minutes, more than double his rookie figures. He played in a total of 75 games, 17 of them as a starter. Davis scored in double figures in his final eight games of the season and 13 of his last 15. He scored a career-high 27 points on 13-for-25 shooting during that stretch in a 105-93 victory at Orlando on April 1, when he led the Sixers in scoring. He grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in the third game of the season, an 83-81 loss to Detroit on Nov. 5. Davis had four double-doubles on the season and was Philadelphia's leading scorer off the bench in 16 games. After the season he became a veteran free agent but elected to re-sign with Philadelphia.

1995-1996 REGULAR SEASON
Davis won a job in preseason by averaging 12.4 ppg, second-best on the team behind Christian Laettner. He didn't play much as a rookie, however, appearing in 57 games as a reserve and averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.0 minutes per game. He scored a career-high 12 points against Seattle on March 8 and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against Toronto exactly one month later. He shot just .369 from the field and .638 from the line.
