BACKGROUND

Loren Meyer, whose college career was derailed by a broken collarbone, came back to become a first-round draft choice of the Dallas Mavericks in 1995 and started 21 games in his rookie season in the NBA. Midway through his second season he was traded by Dallas to the Phoenix Suns, and he played in a total of 54 games with 33 starts for the two clubs in 1996-97. He spent all of 1997-98 on the injured list while recovering from lumbar spine surgery, and appeared in 14 games in a reserve role for the Denver Nuggets in 1998-99. The Nuggets renounced their rights to Meyer on Aug. 5, 1999.
Meyer made a successful return to the Iowa State basketball team in 1994-95 after suffering a broken collarbone when the truck he was riding in was hit by a train on January 18, 1994, causing him to miss the final 15 games of 1993-94 season. He was an honorable mention All-Big Eight selection by the Associated Press and Big Eight coaches after averaging 15.7 points and 8.9 rebounds anbd shooting .556 from the field. During his senior season he wore uniform No. 40 in memory of University of Iowa player and AAU teammate Chris Street, who was killed in a car accident in 1993.
Drafted by Dallas with the 24th overall pick of the first round, Meyer appeared in 72 games as a rookie, including 21 starts. He came on strong late in the season and finished with averages of 5.0 points and 4.4 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game.
He played in 19 games for Dallas, making 16 starts, before he was traded to Phoenix on December 26, 1996 along with Jason Kidd and Tony Dumas for Michael Finley, A.C. Green and Sam Cassell. He played in 35 games for Phoenix, starting 17 of them, and finished the season with overall averages of 4.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game.
He missed all of 1997-98 while recovering from lumbar spine surgery. Prior ro the 1998-99 season, Meyer signed with the Denver Nuggets as a free agent on January 23, 1999, but spent most of the time on the bench, playing in only 14 games.
The Nuggets renounced their rights to Meyer on Aug. 5, 1999.

Meyer split his second pro season between Dallas and Phoenix, appearing in a total of 54 games, 33 as a starter.
He played in 19 games for Dallas, making 16 starts, and averaged 4.1 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13.6 minutes before he was traded to Phoenix on Dec. 26, 1996 along with Jason Kidd and Tony Dumas for Michael Finley, A.C. Green and Sam Cassell.
He played in 35 games for Phoenix, starting 17 of them, and posted averages of 5.4 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game. His best stretch of the season came from Jan. 13 to Feb. 2 when he made 12 starts and averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 24.3 minutes, including a career-high 18 points and a season-high 11 rebounds in a 110-101 win over Denver on Jan. 14.
Meyer appeared in three playoff games for Phoenix, going scoreless but grabbing six rebounds and blocking two shots in a total of 14 minutes.
1995-1996 REGULAR SEASON
Meyer averaged 7.7 points and 6.6 rebounds in the last six games of his rookie season to raise his averages for the year to 5.0 points and 4.4 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game. He played in 72 games and made 21 starts, including 20 in a row from Jan. 12 through Feb. 23, a period in which he averaged 6.4 ppg and 5.9 ppg in 25.2 mpg.
Meyer scored in double figures 10 times, including a season-high 14 points with eight rebounds on March 31 against Portland. He reached double figures in rebounds five times, with a season-high 13 in Dallas' 103-101 double-overtime win over Vancouver on Dec. 28.
His best game of the season may have been on April 13 at Houston, when he had 13 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes before fouling out with 2:27 to play. His only other double-double of the season came on Feb. 15 at Utah, when he had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
