After earning All-America honors at Villanova, the New Jersey Nets tabbed Kittles with the eighth overall pick in the 1996. He became a starter as a rookie, averaged 16.4 ppg and was the team's top three-point shooting threat. He followed that up with a solid second season, averaging 17.2 ppg and again leading the team in three-point shooting. Injuries have set him back since but he has still maintained his effectiveness from the perimeter, stays atop the league leaders in steals as well as being a good finisher on the fast break.

1996-97:
Kittles had an impressive rookie season, stepping into a crowded backcourt and forcing the coaches to create room for him. Veteran Kendall Gill was moved to small forward, where he enjoyed the best season of his career, and Kittles assumed the bulk of the playing time at shooting guard and also played some point guard. He appeared in all 82 games, making 57 starts, and joined Gill as the only Nets to log over 3,000 minutes. He finished fifth in balloting for Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. Kittles averaged 16.4 points, fourth among all NBA rookies and second to Gill among players who spent the entire season with the Nets. He also averaged 3.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 36.7 minutes. His 158 three-pointers easily were the most on the team and established a rookie franchise record. He also set a rookie franchise record for steals in a season wth 149, averaging a team-high 1.91 spg to rank 12th overall in the NBA and first among all rookies. Gill scored in double figures 64 times and had 20+ points 32 times, including each of the last six games of the season. He reached 30 points four times and scored a career-high 40 in a 132-123 loss to Milwaukee on April 13. Kittles had at least three three-pointers in 25 games, sinking a career-high six in eight attempts in a 108-101 loss to Cleveland on Feb. 17, when he scored 30 points. Named as a starter for the Schick Rookie Game at All-Star Weekend, Kittles had nine points and four assists in 24 minutes.
