In 37 games with Dallas, made 21 starts and averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 26.4 minutes ... After joining Miami, numbers improved noticeably as he played in 32 games and made 30 starts, averaging 13.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.34 steals in 37.2 minutes ... Despite being the league's 11th-youngest player at age 22, played like a veteran, helping the Mavericks to the biggest turnaround in the NBA in 1994-95 ... Mashburn and Jackson (25.7 ppg before the injury) were the NBA's highest-scoring teammates for most of the season ... Lit up the scoreboard early and often in 1994-95 ... On 11/12, torched the Chicago Bulls for 50 points, becoming the second-youngest player in NBA history to score 50 or more in a game (Rick Barry was 87 days younger when he hit 57 in a game against the Knicks in 1965) ... Scored more than 40 points in two other games and finished with a scoring average of 24.1 points per game, fifth in the league and second to Karl Malone among forwards ... Nabbed by the Mavericks with the fourth overall pick, then immediately touted as the future of the franchise, along with second-year guard Jim Jackson ... Led all NBA rookies in scoring with 19.2 points per game ... Set seven Mavericks rookie records en route to a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team ... Among his more impressive accomplishments: hit 85 three-pointers for the year and twice scored 37 points in a game ... Those 37-point performances were tops among NBA rookies in 1993-94 ... At age 21 was the second-youngest player in the NBA (behind Chris Webber) but became the first Dallas frontcourt player to score more than 1,000 points since Sam Perkins totaled 1,108 in 1989-90 ... Also managed 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.13 steals per game.

As a junior at the University of Kentucky, was such a polished player that even his coach, Rick Pitino, said he shouldn't stick around for his senior year ...
