    Austin lost weight and got into the best shape of his playing career, and the results were dramatic as he became a valuable addition for the Heat. He played in all 82 games, making 17 starts, most when star center Alonzo Mourning was sidelined by injury, and averaged career-highs of 9.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in 22.9 minutes. At season's end he was voted the NBA's Most Improved Player. ... His total of 1,881 minutes played was more than three times his playing time in three previous NBA seasons. He started 14 consecutive games from Feb. 23 to March 23, 13 of them in place of Mourning, and averaged 15.1 points and 8.2 rebounds in 34.5 minutes during that stretch, helping to keep Miami on top in the Atlantic Division race. ... Austin shot a career-high .502 from the field, second-best behind Mourning among players in the Heat's regular playing rotation. He scored in double figures 39 times, including 22 of Miami's last 31 games, and reached double figures in rebounds 13 times. He had 11 double-doubles. ...     Austin spent the 1995-96 season playing for Tuborg Izmir in the Turkish First Division. He averaged 22.3 ppg and 13.9 rpg. ... On Oct. 3, 1996 he rejoined the NBA, signing as a free agent with the Miami Heat.

    COLLEGE:
    Austin played two years at Kings River Junior College, where he received Juco All-America honorable mention. He transferred to Arizona State, where he averaged 15.0 ppg and 7.4 rpg in 61 games. As a senior he led the Sun Devils in scoring (16.3) and rebounding (8.7).
