    BACKGROUND

    Long, who is the nephew of former NBA player John Long and the cousin of NBA player Terry Mills, was a second-round draft pick and original member of the expansion Miami Heat in 1988.

    2000-01:
    Started at center on March 25 in Toronto ... Did not dress against Toronto on March 11 due to a sprained ankle ... Pulled down double figures in rebounds for the second straight game with 10 in Philadelphia on Feb. 21 ... Had his best game of the season on Feb. 20 in Washington with 16 points on 6-6 shooting, along with a season high 14 rebounds, four steals and one block ... Had a great game on Jan. 31 in Phoenix, as he had a perfect shooting night, going 4-4 from the field and 5-5 from the line for 13 points ...     Placed on the injured list on 2/19 after underoing surgery on 2/16 to repair a fracture in the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and is expected to be sidelined for approximately six weeks ... Totaled 8 points (3-4 FG, 2-3 FT) and 3 rebounds, in 13 minutes, in a 96-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on 12/22.

    1996-1997:
    After ranking 15th in the NBA in rebounding the previous year, Long went through a disappointing season with Detroit in 1996-97. He appeared in 65 games, starting 24 of the team's first 27, but his playing time decreased as the season went on and he was a DNP-CD five times, including four of the final 12 games. He also missed 12 games due to a sprained right ankle, after missing a total of 23 games due to injury in his previous eight seasons. ... Long's production dropped dramatically. He averaged career-lows of 5.0 points and 3.4 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per game, numbers that were barely one-third of what he accomplished the previous season. ... Long scored a season-high 15 points in a 95-66 win over Sacramento on Dec. 1 and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds in a 95-83 loss to Chicago on Christmas Day. ... He came off the bench in all five playoff games for the Pistons, averaging 5.0 points and 2.2 rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game.

    1995-1996:
    The rugged rebounder led the Hawks with 9.6 rebounds per game, enough to rank 15th in the NBA. He also averaged 13.1 points and 2.2 assists in a team-high 36.7 minutes per game and was the only player to start all 82 games for Atlanta. ... Long led the Hawks in rebounding in 55 of the 82 games, reaching double figures 41 times and posting a career-high 21 rebounds at the Lakers on Feb. 14. He also topped the team in scoring 10 times, scoring in double figures 64 times with a season-high 24 points at Minnesota on Feb. 25. He had 32 double-doubles. ... Long was Atlanta's leading rebounder in the playoffs as well, averaging 8.6 rebounds along with 11.4 points and 2.8 assists in 36.2 minutes per game. He opened the playoffs with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds at Indiana, and closed out the postseason with a team-high 24 points and 13 rebounds in Game 5 against Orlando. He also had 13 points and 13 rebounds in Game 3 of the series against the Magic. ... Following the season, Long and Stacey Augmon were dealt to Detroit for two first-round and two second-round draft picks.

    1994-1995:
    Three days into the season the Miami Heat traded Long to the Atlanta Hawks along with Steve Smith and a second-round draft pick for Kevin Willis and a first-round selection. Thus ended Long s six-year tenure with the Heat; he was the last remaining player from Miami s inaugural 1988-89 team. ... Long took over the power forward spot for the Hawks and started 77 games for Atlanta, averaging 11.7 points and 7.5 rebounds. He led the team in rebounding and finished second in steals with 1.35 per game. Hot down the stretch, Long upped his offense to 13.7 points per contest in the season s final 11 games, scoring a career-high 33 points against the Philadelphia 76ers on April 11. ... The Hawks earned the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 42-40 regular-season record. They faced the Indiana Pacers in the first round but were swept in three games. Long was one of the few consistent performers for Atlanta in the postseason, averaging 13.7 points and 11.3 rebounds and shooting .500 from the floor.

    1993-1994:
    After being sidelined for the first month of the season with a fractured right hand, Long was reactivated on December 6. He returned to become the Miami Heat s fourth-leading scorer (11.4 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (7.2 rpg), starting 59 of 69 contests and averaging 31.9 minutes. ... On January 18 Long grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds against the Los Angeles Clippers, and on March 7 he notched his season scoring high with 24 points against the Boston Celtics.

    1992-1993:
    After missing training camp, the preseason, and the first five games of the: as an unsigned restricted free agent, Long started 62 of the 76 games he appeared in. Before the season began, he had played in a franchise-record 161 consecutive games. He started his last 44 games, averaging 15.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. ... For the season, Long averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.37 steals. He led the team in steals while finishing fourth in scoring and second in rebounding. He scored a career-high 31 points twice at New Jersey on February 14 and against Washington on April 23. Long also pulled down 10 rebounds in that game against the Bullets and hit the game-winning shot.

    1991-1992:
    Long played in all 82 games for the Heat, averaging 14.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.7 steals career highs in every category. He also shot a career-best .494 from the field, playing 37.4 minutes per game. His steals total was the highest among all power forwards and third behind David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon among NBA big men. ... Long led the Heat in steals and minutes played and ranked second in rebounding behind Rony Seikaly (11.8 rpg) and third in scoring behind Seikaly (16.4 ppg) and Glen Rice (22.3 ppg). On March 22 Long scored a season-high 29 points in Miami s victory over the New Jersey Nets. During the Heat s first-ever trip to the postseason, Long averaged 12.3 points and 5.0 rebounds as Miami was swept by Chicago in three first-round games.

    1990-1991:
    Long averaged 9.2 points and 7.1 rebounds in 80 games this season. His rebounding average was second best on the team, his .492 field-goal percentage ranked third, and his 1.49 steals per game ranked fourth. After beginning the season on the bench, he became a starter on December 6 and remained in that capacity for the rest of the year. ... The third-year pro pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds in a double-overtime loss at New York on March 14. He scored a season-high 22 points in Miami s win at Dallas on March 2. Long missed only the second and third games of his career in November while recovering from facial injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

    1989-1990:
    Long started the season s first 31 games and averaged 10.8 points and 4.8 rebounds before being relegated to the bench at Golden State on January 4. He was a reserve for the rest of the season. On February 16 he missed the first game of his career after being hit in the left eye by a ball in practice the day before. Long finished the year with a career-low 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and played the fewest minutes of his career at 1,856. ... In their second NBA campaign, the Heat had another rough season, finishing at 18-64 for fifth place, a game ahead of New Jersey in the Atlantic Division.

    1988-1989:
    The Miami Heat selected Long as the 33rd overall pick of the 1988 NBA Draft, making him one of the team s charter members. Long quickly earned respect both within the Miami organization and around the league, earning team MVP honors in his first NBA season. ... The only Heat player to see action in all 82 games, Long averaged 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds, ranking third on the team in scoring and second in minutes played with 2,435 and in steals with 122. His rebounding average was second among rookies to teammate Rony Seikaly s 7.0 mark. He scored 30 points twice (against Atlanta on February 19 and against Houston on April 4), and he had the dubious distinction of leading the NBA in personal fouls with 337 for the season.

    COLLEGE:
    Long played college ball at Eastern Michigan, where as a senior in 1987-88 he averaged 23.0 points and 10.4 rebounds. His total of 215 made free throws that year broke the school record of 208 set by George Gervin in 1971-72.
