A member of the All-Southland Conference First Team as a senior at Nicholls State, 6-9 Gerard King spent one season in the CBA and two in the Italian League before hooking on with the San Antonio Spurs and earning an NBA championship ring in 1998-99.
The 6-9 King finished his college career as the third-leading scorer (1,834 points) and sixth-leading rebounder (786 rebounds) in Nicholls State history. In 28 games as a senior he averaged 21.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, shooting .563 from the field and .703 from the free throw line. He previously had averaged 13.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg as a freshman, 13.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg as a sophomore and 18.5 ppg and 8.9 rpg as a junior, when he made All-Southland Conference Second Team.
Undrafted by the NBA, he played in 23 games for the Quad City Thunder of the CBA, averaging 11.4 ppg and 9.0 rpg and shooting .587 from the field. Then it was on to Italy, where he played the 1996-97 season with Mens Sana Siena and the 1997-98 campaign with Fontantafredda Sienna. He also competed for the USA Basketball Men's Team which captured the bronze medal at the FIBA World Championship in Athens, Greece in 1998.
King signed with San Antonio as a free agent on January 21, 1999 and earned a spot on the roster, appearing in 19 games as a reserve and averaging 1.2 points and 0.7 rebounds in 3.3 minutes per game. He also appeared in eight playoff contests.
