BACKGROUND

A three-time All-West Coast Conference performer at Pepperdine, Gerald Brown signed with the Phoenix Suns after being bypassed in the 1998 NBA Draft and played in 33 games as a rookie, averaging 2.4 ppg. Brown, a 6-4 guard, was Pepperdine's leading scorer in each of his last three seasons, missing the 1996-97 season due to an ACL injury in his right knee. He averaged career-highs of 17.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg as a junior, then came back after sitting out a year and nearly matched those figures with marks of 16.9 ppg and 5.4 rpg as a senior. He led the WCC in scoring as a junior. Not selected in the 1998 NBA Draft, he averaged 17.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists and shot .565 from the field in the Los Angeles Summer Pro League. He was signed by the Suns as a free agent on January 25, 1999 and made the roster, appearing in 33 games as a rookie, all in a reserve role. He averaged 2.4 points in 7.2 minutes per game.
