BACKGROUND

A consensus All-American at Michigan in 1987-88 and the school's all-time leader in assists, Gary Grant was a first-round draft choice of the Seattle SuperSonics who was promptly traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, for whom he played seven seasons. In the past four years he has seen action with New York, Miami and Portland in the NBA, as well as teams in the CBA and in Greece. A 6-3 guard, Grant handed out 735 assists and scored 2,222 points in his four seasons at Michigan to finish first and second, respectively, on the school's all-time lists. He was named the Wolverines' Defensive Player of the Year all four years. He averaged 22.4 points, 5.4 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game and shot .537 from the field and .485 from three-point range as a junior, and 21.1 points, 6.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game and shot .530 from the field and .444 from three-point range as a senior. Grant was the 15th player chosen in the 1988 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Clippers, along with a future No. 1 pick, for power forward Michael Cage. He had several strong seasons in Los Angeles, leading all rookies in assists and steals in 1988-89 and averaging career-highs of 13.1 points, 10.0 assists and 2.45 steals per game in 1989-90, a season that ended after 44 games when he suffered a broken and dislocated left ankle. He came back to average 8.7 points and 8.6 assists in 68 games in 1990-91, ranking eighth in the league in assists, and again led the Clippers in assists with 6.9 per game in 1991-92. He was used mostly as a reserve in his remaining three seasons with the Clippers, including 1994-95 when missed 29 games because of a knee injury and 16 due to a strained back. He moved to New York as a free agent and played in 47 games in 1995-96, averaging 4.9 points and 1.5 assists in 12.7 minutes per game. Then it was on to Miami as a free agent, and he played in 28 games in 1996-97 and averaged 3.9 points and 1.6 assists before going on the injured list with back spasms. Over the next summer he was traded to Sacramento and waived by the Kings, so he began the 1997-98 season with the Yakima Sun Kings of the CBA, where he averaged 16.0 points and 5.9 assists before signing with Portland on March 22, 1998. He played in 22 games for the Blazers, averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 assists in 16.3 minutes per game. He played most of 1998-99 with Aris in Greece, but re-signed with Portland on April 25, 1999.
