He erupted for a career-high 38 points in a 115-101 win over Utah on Dec. 30. He shot 10-for-21 from the field, 3-for-6 from three-point range and 15-for-15 from the foul line in that game, in which he also had season-highs of nine assists and 43 minutes. He also had two games of 31 points... Martin led the Clippers in scoring 16 times and assists 39 times... Martin averaged 11.0 points and a team-high 4.3 assists in Utah's three playoff games. 1995-96 SEASON: Appeared in four preseason games with Minnesota but was released on Nov. 1 and signed by the Vancouver Grizzlies... Played 24 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 6.7 points, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game, before he was traded back to Minnesota on 1/12 for a second-round draft pick... Martin's rights were renounced by Minnesota on 7/19/96. 1994-95 SEASON: Martin burst into the Continental Basketball Association with a bang in 1994-95, earning a call-up to the NBA that resulted in a handful of starting assignments for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played in 37 games with the Sioux Falls Skyforce and ranked 10th in the CBA in scoring (21.0 ppg), third in assists (7.8 apg), and eighth in free-throw percentage (.867)... In the 1995 CBA All-Star Game, he put up 11 points and handed out a team-high 6 assists... At season's end he was named to the CBA All-League Second Team and finished third in the balloting for CBA Newcomer of the Year... Shorthanded at point guard all season because of an injury to Micheal Williams, the Timberwolves signed Martin to the first of two 10-day contracts on 2/13 and then inked him for the remainder of the year on 3/7... Totaled 34 appearances for Minnesota, starting in 9 games, and averaged 7.5 points and 3.9 assists in 23.6 minutes per contest. The Wolves finished at a disappointing 21-61. College: A Parade magazine First-Team All-American as a high school senior, Martin played on a the UCLA Bruins squad with future NBA players Don MacLean, Tracy Murray and Mitchell Butler... A quick point guard, he completed his college career at UCLA in 1992 ranked first in school history in both assists (636) and steals (179)... His career assists total also placed him fourth on the Pac-10 Conference's all-time list... Averaged 9.3 points and 4.9 assists in his four years at UCLA... As a junior, he averaged a career-high 11.6 points and 6.8 assists, and his assists average was the best in the Pac-10 and the 16th highest in the country... .Single-season high of 217 assists was second all-time at UCLA to Pooh Richardson's 236. |
