BACKGROUND
An Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press as a sophomore at Oregon State, Corey Benjamin opted for early entry and was selected in the first round of the 1998 NBA Draft as the 28th overall pick by the World Champion Chicago Bulls. He appeared in 31 games as a rookie, all but one in a reserve role, in a season interrupted by injuries and illness, and played in 48 games including 10 starts in his second season, when he averaged 7.7 points per game.
The 6-6 guard led Oregon State in scoring with 14.9 ppg as a freshman, notching double figures in 20 contests and pouring in 20 or more points five times, and was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. As a sophomore, Benjamin led the team in scoring at 19.8 ppg, ranking second in the Pac-10 and 38th in the nation. Benjamin also ranked seventh in the conference in steals (1.92 spg), fifth in field goal percentage, 19th in rebounding and was one of only four players in the league to lead his team in scoring and rebounding. He was an honorable mention All-Pac 10 selection.
After being drafted on the first round in 1998, Benjamin played a backup role on the Bulls as a rookie, seeing limited action and contributing 3.8 points in 10.3 minutes per game. He raised those figures to 7.7 points in 18.0 minutes per game in his second season, despite being bothered for much of the year by sprains to one ankle or the other.
