BACKGROUND
|
|
Ben Davis, who played college ball at Arizona, was a second-round draft choice of the Phoenix Suns in 1996 who played 20 games as a rookie, then spent most of 1997-98 in the CBA before finishing the season with the New York Knicks. He was on the injured list for most of 1998-99, playing in eight games for the Knicks.
A 6-9 forward, Davis transferred to Arizona from Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College, where he was a member of the 1994 NJCAA All-Star team that played at the 14th annual USA Basketball Invitational Tournament in Denver, Colorado. Prior to Hutchinson CC, Davis attended the University of Florida and Kansas University. As a senior at Arizona, Davis was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team after leading the Pac-10 in rebounding (9.5 rpg) and double-doubles (17). He led Arizona in scoring with 14.2 ppg and grabbed 200 rebounds in conference action, a school record.
Drafted on the second round by Phoenix, 43rd overall, Davis played in 20 games as a rookie with the Suns, averaging 1.5 ppg and 1.3 rpg in 4.9 mpg. He was not resigned over the summer and was cut after a tryout with Miami, so he spent most of 1997-98 playing for Grand Rapids of the CBA before hooking on with New York on February 28. He played in seven games for the Knicks over the finals seven weeks of the season.
He was on the injured list for much of the 1998-99 season because of lower back pain. He played in eight games for New York, averaging 2.1 ppg.
