Detroit Pistons Youth Basketball Training Camp Announces Schedule For Summer 2009

Auburn Hills, Mich. --- According to FIBA (International Basketball Federation), there are more than 300 million people playing basketball, worldwide. That’s a lot of competition.

This summer, the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Shock are giving young basketball players an opportunity to get a leg up on all that competition by hosting the Detroit Pistons Youth Training Camps throughout Michigan and northern Ohio. The camps, offered for both three-day and four-day sessions, will make 19 stops throughout the summer of 2009, starting June 8-11 in Lansing.

The Training Camps are for boys and girls from grades 1-11 and of all basketball skill levels. Cost of the Training Camps ranges from $85 (three-day) to $179 (four-day) with discounts available for early registration, referrals and returning campers. For the three-day camps, campers receive a t-shirt and tickets to a 2009-10 Pistons regular season game. Four-day campers receive a Detroit Pistons reversible jersey, a Pistons basketball and a ticket to a Pistons 2009-10 regular season game.

Campers are tutored on the basic fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling and defense. They are tested with daily shooting contests. Each day of camp begins and ends with competitive five-on-five games, where campers are matched up based upon age and skill levels.

The Four-Day Training Camps are supervised by Steve “Coach Steve” Moreland, the director of development and basketball camps/clinics who has been running the camps since their inception in 1996. Other camp coaches and staff consist of semi-pro and college basketball players.

“Our philosophy with the camps has been consistent since we started: teach our campers the sound fundamentals of the game and show them how to apply them both on and off the basketball court,” said Coach Steve. “We want our campers to leave with skills – teamwork, good sportsmanship, commitment, work ethic -- that will help them succeed in the game of basketball AND the game of life.”

The 2009 Detroit Pistons Youth Four-Day Basketball Training Camp Schedule:

The three-day camps are supervised by Aaron “Coach Aaron” Smith, the director of Year Round Hoops. Coach Aaron has been involved in the camps program, as a counselor, assistant coach and now a head coach, since 2002.
