Jonathon and Josef are two 18-year-olds from Livonia. Beyond that, they don’t share many common interests.
Jonathon’s favorite movie is the action epic Gladiator; Josef prefers the ridiculuous comedy of Super Troopers.
Jonathon would like nothing more than to tear into a juicy steak; Josef would rather order enchiladas or nachos.
Johnathon would chew on Twizzlers while studying history. Josef would take a box of Sour Patch Kids into the science lab.
What they have in common, besides age and hometown, is that both battle every day with muscular disease.
Jonathon has muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease that progressively breaks down the skeletal muscles that control movement. Josef has spinal muscular atrophy, a motor neuron disease. The motor neurons affect voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. In other words, almost everything.
They’re also both Wish Kids, which makes them very unique. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted thousands of individual wishes for individual kids.
But these best friends decided their Wish wouldn’t be as worthwhile if they couldn’t do it together. Jon and Joey’s wish is to go on a cruise to Hawaii with their families, and each other. Their cruise will be one of the Wishes granted with the donations raised by the Pistons Cares Telethon Benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.
It’s a good thing they’ll have lots to do on the cruise with their families besides watching TV - they would each want the remote. Jon would channel surf to the first sporting event.
Joey would insist on Seinfeld re-runs.
