I was asked to put down what makes me a credible blog writer for www.pistons.com. Here goes....this is my second stint with the Detroit Pistons. In 1982, I started on the scoring crew for the team when they were at the Silverdome. I worked games after school and on weekends and was a runner --- I ran stats to the media. In 1989, after we moved to The Palace, I did my college internship with the team. In 1990, I was hired full-time in the public relations department. Along with my duties in PR, I worked for the assistant coaches logging games and making tendency tapes. In 1993, I left to pursue other work. I tried my hand at the insurance industry. Hated it. I owned my own PR firm in Washington D.C. Loved it. Missed Motown, though.
In 2001, I returned to the organization in my current capacity as director of strategic communications. The job is a hybrid of public relations, communications, promotions, marketing, advertising and brand management. My direct boss is our CEO Tom Wilson, however, I have the pleasure of working with most everyone at The Palace. My position allows me to touch many projects in the organization and be in contact with many people. I am also afforded a great deal of latitude and able to be "behind-the-scenes" a lot.
I believe with my history, my experiences in the NBA, my ability to go backstage at The Palace and get different perspectives from many different groups gives me an advantage when writing these blogs. I hope that I can bring some insight into what happens during the season and show you that "little man behind the curtain" at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
