Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock Send Championship Trophies on Tour of Michigan

2004 NBA Champions and 2003 WNBA Champions Thank Fans for Great Seasons by Offering Photo Opportunities with Championship Trophies

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – July 1, 2004 - The 2004 NBA Champion Detroit Pistons along with the 2003 WNBA Champion Detroit Shock will show their appreciation to the hardest workin’ fans in basketball by taking their respective championship trophies on a tour of Michigan this summer.

The Larry O’Brien Trophy and the WNBA Championship Trophy will be on display together at various festivals, parades, and tournaments around the state during July, August and September.

The trophies will also make appearances at random “Workin’ Man (and Woman)” stops throughout the state including police and fire departments, manufacturing plants, hospitals, construction sites, post offices and other businesses that embody the “Goin’ to Work. Every Night” and “Bring It” mantras of the two teams.

The 2004 Championship Trophies Tour will kick off the week after the Fourth of July holiday in Traverse City on July 8th at the National Cherry Festival. From there, the trophies will travel to other Michigan summer hot spots including the Ann Arbor Art Fair (July 24th), the Buick Open Golf Tournament (July 28th), the Michigan State Fair (August 12th), the Woodward Dream Cruise (August 21st) and the Chrysler Arts, Beats and Eats Festival (September 3rd).

The trophies will appear at various golf outings during the summer, including George Blaha’s Vista Maria Charity Outing on July 19th. The trophies will make a special stop at the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in Ludington on July 17th and the Detroit Pistons Basketball Camps in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids on August 16th.

The trophies will travel to the State Capital on July 22nd, appearing with Governor Jennifer Granholm and several state representatives. In the evening of the 22nd, the trophies will stop in at a Lansing Lugnuts home game.

In the first week of August, the trophies will be hosted by Guardian Industries, which is owned by Mr. William Davidson, the owner of the Detroit Pistons and the Detroit Shock.

The Pistons and Shock may add dates based upon availability. Dates and locations for the “Workin’ Man (or Woman)” portion of the tour have yet to be determined.

National Cherry Festival – Traverse City, MI
On Thursday, July 8th, the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock kicked off the 2004 Championship Trophies Tour at the 78th Annual National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, MI. More than 2,500 patrons (some from as far as Florida and Connecticut) turned out to visit and take pictures with the teams’ championship hardware. Click here for photos.

Dick Purtan Golf Classic – Rochester Hills, MI
Palace Sports & Entertainment CEO Tom Wilson accompanied the NBA and WNBA trophies to the Seventh Annual Dick Purtan Golf Classic at Oakland University’s Katke-Cousins Golf Course on Monday, July 12th. The trophies were featured during the morning’s on-location broadcast, and then spent the day with event host and Michigan radio legend Dick Purtan, on the third tee box. Click here for photos.

Pistons Championship DVD Premiere – Auburn Hills, MI
The Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy and the WNBA Championship Trophy were on display in the Palace’s West Atrium before the Detroit Shock’s home game against the Sacramento Monarchs on Monday, July 12th. After the game, the NBA Championship Trophy joined Richard Hamilton, Lindsay Hunter, Tayshaun Prince, and over 9,000 fans on the Palace floor for the premiere of the Pistons Championship DVD. WDIV Fall Television Shows Premiere – Birmingham, MI
On Wednesday July 14, 2004 the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy and the WNBA Championship Trophy were showcased at the Palladium Theatre in downtown Birmingham. The event was hosted by WDIV for various clientele to preview their fall line-up of television programs. Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball – Ludington MI
With over 5,000 participants, volunteers and spectators in attendance on July 17th, the Championship trophies were a huge hit at the Gus Macker in Ludington. Pistons and Shock fans came from all over Northwest Michigan and as far as Chicago and Ohio to have their picture taken with the trophies. Click here for photos.

George Blaha Vista Maria Golf Outing – Bloomfield Hills, MI
On Saturday July 19th the Championship trophies traveled to the 15th Annual Vista Maria golf outing at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Through a raffle administered by Vista Maria, one lucky donor walked away from the event with the unbelievable opportunity of hosting the trophies at their home for a day. The event raised over $100,000 for the Vista Maria charity, which is a home for abused girls. Click here for photos.

State Capitol Building and Oldsmobile Park – Lansing, MI
The NBA and WNBA Championship Trophies spent the day in Lansing, MI, on Thursday, July 22nd. In the morning, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, George Blaha, and a number of state senators and representatives welcomed the trophies to the State Capitol during an opening ceremony in the glass floor rotunda. Later that evening, the trophies moved across town to Oldsmobile Park, home of the 2003 Midwest League Champion Lansing Lugnuts. Click here for photos.

Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, The Original – Ann Arbor, MI
The next leg of the Tour took the trophies to Wolverine Country for the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair on Saturday, July 24th. Sports fanatics and art enthusiasts alike made their way to the Trophy Tour kiosk on Washington St. to celebrate not only the Pistons and Shock’s championship seasons, but also the trophies’ sculptural and artistic merit. General Motors Service Parts Operations – Waterford, MI
The trophies made a tour stop on July 27th at the General Motors – Service Parts Operations plant in Waterford, Michigan. Over 400 employees, including management and the hourly workers, were given the opportunity to have their photos taken with the shimmering trophies. Click here for photos.

Buick Open – Grand Blanc, MI
The Trophy Tour made a stop at the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, MI, on August 28th. The NBA and WNBA Championship trophies were on display for fans to see during Wednesday’s Pro-Am event, and even made a trip out to the practice tee for a little face time with fan favorite and eventual tournament runner-up John Daly. Beach Grill – St. Clair Shores, MI
The trophies enjoyed a pseudo vacation on Thursday, July 29th when they stopped for an evening at the Beach Grill on the shores of beautiful Lake St. Clair. The restaurants patrons and employees had an opportunity to take pictures with the trophies, and were treated to Pistons T-shirts and temporary tattoos by Rock Financial, the Pistons’ presenting sponsor. Charlevoix Hospital – Charlevoix, MI
On Tuesday, August 10th, the trophies traveled north to Charlevoix, MI. Hundreds of locals and vacationers alike flocked to the downtown concert shell to visit with the Pistons’ and Shock’s championship hardware. Their generous monetary donations helped the city’s hospital raise over $1,000 for the purchase of new mammography technology. Click here for photos.

Extreme Makeover – Oak Park, MI
The NBA and WNBA Championship trophies visited the set of ABC’s hit reality show, “Extreme Home Makeover,” on Wednesday, August 11th. Hooper, the Pistons’ mascot, escorted the trophies around the construction site to share them with the show’s cast and crew, who spent 6 days renovating a house for a family in Oak Park, MI.
