Postgame Quotes - December 8, 2012

Pistons at Cavaliers

Detroit: Lawrence Frank | Andre Drummond
Cleveland: Byron Scott | Tyler Zeller | Daniel Gibson

Pistons Coach Lawrence Frank

(On the turning point in the game): “The game really changed with six minutes to go in the third quarter. From that point on, we went on a 46 to 33 run. We bent but we didn’t break.”

(On Jason Maxiell): “We needed some of those momentum-changing plays. I didn’t like our energy and we needed some spark. As long as our hearts kept beating, I knew we would give ourselves a chance. Max (Maxiell) was good for that. Max gave us real good energy. ”

(On Cavaliers’ Jeremy Pargo): “Early on, we had a hard time with Pargo. Pargo looked great. He was getting into the paint and we were having trouble with him so our emphasis was on-the-ball defense with him.”

Pistons Center Andre Drummond

(On Brandon Knight’s performance): “He played with a force. He played real hard and the shots he put up were falling. Tonight was his night.”

(On playing versus Anderson Varejao): “It’s not enough to box him out; you have to ride him out. Once you hit him once, he’s not going to stop. He is going to keep coming and you have to push him out. I’ve learned some things from playing him on how to get rebounds.”

(On what specifically he has learned from Varejao): “Can’t tell you that. Everybody wants to know.”

Cavaliers Head Coach Byron Scott

(On the game tonight): “Sounds like a broken record. I think our guys are competing and playing hard. We just can’t afford to have some of the mistakes and breakdowns that we’re having. The 14 turnovers weren’t that bad, but when you give up 26 points off of them, that kills you. We have to do a better job of playing defense without fouling. They got to the free throw line 33 times. The defense was better, but we just have to do a better job of completing (the game). Rebounding, I thought we did a pretty good job. It’s just little areas right now that we’ve got to continue to concentrate on.”

(On areas the team needs to work on): “I think every game, there’s pretty much two or three things. We’ve just got to continue to focus on those things and cut them down to a minimum. One of the things we talked about as far as turnovers go was keeping it around 14 a game. That’s something we wanted to shoot for. We also talked about being one of the better transition teams in this game. Giving up 16 points in transition and 26 points off of your turnovers, those are just things that are so hard to overcome. Like I said the other day, you almost have to play near perfect. We’re going to make mistakes on both ends of the floor, but again, our guys are competing. They’re playing hard and that’s all I can ask for.”

(On Detroit getting to the free throw line 33 times): “I thought they were pretty aggressive. Some of the fouls we got, we were just out of position. For the most part, I think they were aggressive going towards the basket. Some of the fouls we committed on purpose. Andre Drummond caught it down low a few times and I told our guys about eight times that if he catches it in the paint like that, you have to foul him; make him go to the free throw line. I think we did that once or twice out of the six or seven times that we had the opportunity to foul him.”

Cavaliers Center Tyler Zeller

(On the difference in the game in the second half): “Offensively we need to keep moving the ball; we need to be crisper with our passes. Offensively for them, they changed their scheme. In the first half, they were trying to do a lot more; loading up on one side and isolating on the other. In the second half they started moving the ball a little better and you have to give them credit for making the right adjustments.”

(On Brandon Knight’s performance): “You have to give him credit, he shot the ball well. We could have challenged his shot a little more and got to him a little quicker.”

(On the fourth quarter): “We’ve just got to put four quarters together, which we’ve struggled with all year. We have slow starts and then finish strong and vice versa. We’ve got to put four quarters together and be able to withstand runs.”

(On the first half): “I thought we moved the ball very well. Jeremy (Pargo) did a great job as well as Donald Sloan as far as creating for people and we hit shots. In the second half, they made adjustments and finished strong.”

Cavaliers Guard Daniel Gibson

(On giving themselves a better chance to win): “We have to come out prepared, especially defensively to give yourself an opportunity to win. We’re down on a few playmakers, so we have to depend more on our offensive sets than you would with guys creating. You have to play a very solid game defensively to give yourself a chance to win.”

(On Brandon Knight’s performance in the second half): “He got pretty aggressive. It seemed that every time he got a pick and roll, he split it. He started pushing the ball and putting pressure on our defense. He did a good job in the second half of getting his team together to get the win.”
