AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced this evening that the club has acquired Fabricio Oberto as part of a three-team trade with San Antonio and Milwaukee. Amir Johnson has been traded to Milwaukee as part of that deal.
Oberto, 34, averaged 3.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 0.9 blocks and 15.3 minutes in 274 games with San Antonio. He was not drafted by an NBA franchise and was signed by the Spurs on August 2, 2005. A member of the Spurs team that won the 2007 NBA Championship, he ranks as the club’s all-time playoff leader in career field goal percentage at 60.3% (85-141 FG). He was a member of the gold-medal-winning Argentinean Olympic team in 2004 and the bronze-medal-winning Argentinean squad in 2008. Oberto has played professionally since 1993 for teams in Argentina (1995-98), Greece (1998-99) and Spain (1999-2005).
Johnson compiled averages of 3.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.16 blocks and 13.6 minutes per game in 135 games with the Pistons. Selected in the second round (#56 overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft, he was the third high school player to be drafted by the Pistons and the last high school player to be drafted by an NBA team. Johnson appeared in a career-high-tying 62 games last season (career-high 24 starts), averaging 3.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.97 blocks per game.
