Greg Monroe Named to 2010-11 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Team

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The National Basketball Association announced today that forward Greg Monroe was named to the 2010-11 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team. For the second straight season, a Pistons rookie earned NBA All-Rookie team honors following Jonas Jerebko’s selection last year. This is the first time the Pistons have had consecutive all-rookie selections since Lindsey Hunter was named to the second team in 1993-94 and Grant Hill was named to the first team in 1994-95. Monroe became the 17th player in franchise history to receive all-rookie team honors.

The T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team also includes Minnesota’s Wesley Johnson, the Clippers’ Eric Bledsoe, Utah’s Derrick Favors and Indiana’s Paul George.

“Greg did a great job for us both on and off the court this season and we are pleased that he has been recognized as a member of the NBA’s All-Rookie Team,” said Joe Dumars, President of Basketball Operations for the Pistons. “He will continue to grow and develop as a basketball player and we know he has a bright future ahead of him."

Monroe appeared in 80 games (48 starts) averaging 9.4 points (.551 FG), a team-leading 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, a team-high 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks in 27.8 minutes per game. In 48 starts, he averaged 12.0 points, 9.1 rebounds and 32.6 minutes while shooting 59% from the field. Among NBA rookies who qualified for the following statistical categories, he ranked fifth in points per game (9.4), third in rebounds per game (7.5), first in field goal percentage [.551 (sixth-best in the entire NBA)], first in steals per game (1.2) and fifth in blocks per game (0.6).

The seventh overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, Monroe led the Pistons with 21 double-doubles, the most by a Piston since the 2005-06 season, including two streaks of four consecutive games with a double-double. It marked the first time a Piston rookie recorded four straight double-doubles since Terry Tyler during the 1978-79 season. Selected as a member of the Rookie Team as part of the 2011 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge and Youth Jam at NBA All-Star 2011, Monroe was one of only two rookies (Blake Griffin) to average a double-double (13.7 points and 10.0 rebounds) after the all-star break. His 601 total rebounds were also the most by a Pistons rookie since Tyler’s 648.

The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select five players for the first team and five players for the second team, regardless of position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their own team. Two points were awarded for first team votes and one for second team votes.
