Max Appeal

For someone who grew up idolizing Michael Jordan, one would at least think that Jason Maxiell’s game would possess a little finesse and grace. Not so for the second-year Pistons forward who’s becoming known for his rim-rattling dunks and physical play.

“I just love to play aggressive,” said Maxiell. “I only know how to play hard and I love to attack the rim.”

Despite limited playing time last season, when Maxiell did step on the court he wowed fans with his thunderous dunks and his relentless attack on the basket. He only played in 26 games averaging 2.3 points in 6.1 minutes per game, but showed flashes of what could be expected with more playing time.

“I was always ready when my name was called,” said Maxiell who was drafted 26th overall by the Pistons in the 2005 NBA Draft. “We had a very good team so I knew playing time was hard to come by. Whenever I did get a chance to play, I had to show that I wanted to play.”

Going into his second NBA season, Maxiell envisions more playing time and knows what will be expected of him when he gets on the court.

“Just to bring energy off the bench and give my teammates a breather,” said the 6-7, 260-pound University of Cincinnati product. “I’ve already lost 15 pounds during my offseason workouts and I’m getting in great playing shape. I’ll be ready.”

After four games at the Las Vegas Summer League, Maxiell is averaging 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and shooting 47.5% from the field. He quickly became a crowd favorite and has been entertaining the Vegas fans with his signature power dunks and aggressive offensive play.

Going up against the likes of Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess in practice has significantly helped in Maxiell’s development.

“All of those guys have been NBA All-Stars and have proven themselves in this league,” Maxiell said. “At the University of Cincinnati we’re known for not backing down from anyone so I loved the challenge of going up against those guys. They definitely helped to make me better.”

Although he knows he will still be playing behind some veteran players next season, Maxiell expects to be an improved player and wants help the Pistons.

“I’ll be ready to do whatever is asked of me,” he said. “I still think we have a very good team and I look forward to next season.”

With his enthusiasm and desire to improve, Pistons fan can expect an even more tenacious and aggressive Maxiell. Finesse and grace will be left for off-court activities.
