Hooper & the Flight Crew expands to nine dunkers
A Full Flight
by Carey Nathanson

The Pistons’ Flight Crew will expand to nine dunkers in 2008-09. Three first-year performers - Chad Layton, T.J. Vernaci and Chris Yee - will join the most experienced trampoline dunk team the Pistons have ever fielded.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase our talent in front of Pistons fans and spectators all across Michigan,” said Flight Crew director Taylor Griswold. “I think that we have one of our best and most seasoned teams ever and with our new additions, it should make for a great year.”

The Pistons’ mascot Hooper will return along with Glen Clark, Samer El-Awad, Mike Myers, Adam Rapezzi and Dan Thomas. The newcomers each made a strong impression during the June tryout.

“It is a challenge to find the combination of acrobatic talent and ball-handling skills; however, these gentlemen proved they had both,” Griswold said. “All three of these rookies are great guys that will definitely enhance this team with their athletic potential and enthusiasm for learning. I believe their excitement will even motivate my veteran members to try new tricks as well.”

Chad and T.J. have a background in gymnastics, which helped them to quickly excel at jumping off the trampolines and feel comfortable high in the air. “It just seems like it’s going to be so much fun, being able to perform in front all those people,” Chad said. “I’m just excited, I can’t wait.”

Third time was the charm for rookie Chris Yee, who auditioned for the Flight Crew the last two years. His improvement was evident during this year’s tryouts. With an enthusiastic personality and serious style, there was no question he was perfect for the team in 2008. “It feels great,” Chris said. “To finally make it after all of my hard work and just never giving up, I accomplished something that I have always wanted to do.”

Though the Flight Crew performs regularly at The Palace during Pistons and Shock games, they also bring their aerial show to a variety of events, including state fairs and festivals in the summer and school pep rallies and assemblies during the school year.
