AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 26, 2011 – Despite economic challenges across Metro Detroit, The Detroit Pistons and Allstate’s “Good Hands, Warm Hands” Mitten Drive collected more than 14,000 winter items for Orchards Children’s Services with donations from Pistons fans and Michigan schools statewide.

The official donation of the items will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 26, before the Pistons vs. Denver Nuggets game at The Palace of Auburn Hills, as Pistons Guard, Rodney Stuckey, will present coats, hats and mittens to children from Orchards Children’s Services on the Pistons court. Orchards will distribute the donated winter gear to hundreds of families statewide.

At halftime of the game, Allstate Insurance Michigan Agency Leader Chris Markey and Orchards representative Brandon Scott will present a $2,500 grant check to Navigator School in Pinckney for collecting the most items of the top 10 participating schools.

“On behalf of Allstate, I want to congratulate the students at Navigator School and all of the participating schools for a record-setting winter clothing collection for Orchards Children’s Services,” said Markey. “We’re so pleased to see Metro Detroiters give generously to support Michigan families in need.”

From Nov. 26 to Dec. 29, fans were encouraged to bring mittens, hats, scarves and other winter accessories to Pistons home games at The Palace. In addition, fans could purchase Pistons/Allstate-branded gloves for $5 with the proceeds going to purchase additional winter gear.

The LEAGUE of Michigan, a non-profit dedicated to incorporating philanthropy in schools, encouraged schools across Southeastern Michigan to host mitten drives at their schools to donate to Orchards Children’s Services. More than 300 classrooms in 46 schools and in-arena efforts at Pistons games provided more than 14,000 mittens and other winter gear for the drive. The top 10 schools received Pistons tickets and grants from Allstate and the Pistons-Palace Foundation to be used for educational purposes.

The 2010-2011 Pistons and Allstate “Good Hands, Warm Hands” Mitten Drive marked the most successful collection since its inception eight years ago.
