Crew Clinic
by Ryan Pretzer

“There’s no perfect way to shoot a basketball,” Pistons assistant coach Michael Curry said. “You want to practice as much as you can and be consistent with the form you use to shoot.” That’s just one of the pointers Curry gave to 280 youngsters at a Crew Clinic on Mar. 13 at Oakland University.

Curry showed the campers several drills with the help of Pistons Amir Johnson, Rodney Stuckey and Walter Herrmann. Johnson demonstrated rebounding and passing drills, Stuckey did dribbling and shooting drills and Herrmann showed the kids defense and a layup drills. The players paired up with an eager helper from the audience for all of their demonstrations.

The players also answered kids’ questions. Johnson talked about how he excelled in track and field (especially the high jump) before sprouting to 6-foot-9 and taking his athletic exploits to a basketball court. Several campers tried to guess where Walter Herrmann is from (Europe? France?) before a camper correctly guessed Argentina. Herrmann talked about playing for his native country in the 2004 Olympics, where Team Argentina won the gold medal.

Stuckey was asked about his relationship with his mentor, All-Star Chauncey Billups. He said he appreciates the chance to learn from one of the NBA’s most accomplished leaders but still looks forward to the day when he too is a starting point guard.

Then it was time to hoop it up as Coach Steve Moreland from the Pistons’ camps and clinics program gave the kids an hour of on-court excitement to practice drills and have some fun.
