Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game - Part One

Lindsey Hunter and John Long coached the Motor City Rollers, with the help of Detroit recording artist Trick Trick and NFL Hall of Famer Lem Barney. Hunter, along with his coaching staff, was all over floor encouraging his team to victory - Trick Trick even picked up a technical foul. The Rollers won, 27-23, giving Hunter tie with his nemesis, Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones, who led the Detroit Jam to victory in last year’s game.


The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan established “The Tim Codd SportsAbility Scholarship” in 2007. Before the game, Mr. Codd presented the inaugural scholarship to Jeff Skalski, who will compete at the U.S. Paralympics Table Tennis Championships in December. He was the gold medalist at the Michigan Wheelchair Games in May.

Another award presented Tuesday was the Jerry Stackhouse award. The former Pistons guard helped start the event when he played in Detroit six years ago. The award is presented to an individual who shows exceptional commitment to the SportsAbility program.


Amongst the media personalities - Fox 2’s Lila Lazarus, WDIV’s Devin Scillian and WXYZ’s Vic Faust (far right) - was Jimmy Moceri from the Michigan Thunderbirds Wheelchair Basketball Team. Moceri, who graduated from Macomb Dakota in the spring, made the go-ahead basket to break a 23-23 tie. He also knocked down one of the longest jumpers in the game, showing the same form he did for the Dakota Cougars varsity team before he was paralyzed just over a year ago. He had only played wheelchair basketball six times before Tuesday.


Darryl “Tree” Waller is a National Wheelchair Basketball Hall of Famer, and he showed why Tuesday. He scored the game’s first six points for the Jam….
