Detroit Pistons In Search of Spare Tires and Drumline Members

The Detroit Pistons are looking for this season’s best of the best when it comes to larger-than-life dancers and talented rudimental drummers. The Detroit Pistons will hold auditions for the 2009-10 Spare Tire Dance Team on Wednesday, October 21 at 4 p.m. and the Pistons Drumline on Sunday, October 25 at 2 p.m. Both auditions will take place at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Spare Tires are a dance team comprised of larger-than-life, “Chris Farley-type” entertainers who perform during home games of the Detroit Pistons. Formed as an off-shoot of the Automotion Dance Team, the Spare Tires have become one of the team’s most popular game night entertainers when they strut their stuff during timeouts. The Spare Tires also make appearances as representatives of the Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment.

The Spare Tires audition process will include the following steps: registration, learn and perform dance moves, perform a special talent and personal interviews. Candidates are encouraged to pre-register online at Pistons.com. Walk-ins will also be auditioned subject to time constraints. Candidates should enter through the West Atrium and will be directed to the registration area. Potential Spare Tires must be at least 18 years of age.

The Pistons Drumline was formed in 2005 to add excitement to The Palace and energize NBA fans at Pistons home games. Sunday, October 25 marks the first time the Drumline will host open auditions. Registration begins at 2 p.m. in The Palace West Atrium.

The Drumline consists of snare, bass, tenor and cymbal sections. The Pistons will supply drums, but candidates are welcome and encouraged to bring their own equipment.

Drumline candidates are required to memorize two specified performance pieces, the video intro from 2006 and Intro Naningo, on the primary instrument they will be auditioning on. They will also be asked to perform a 30-60 second individual performance to showcase their abilities and unique style, which could enhance a full-line production.

For more information on both auditions, candidates are encouraged to log onto and pre-register at Pistons.com.
