Multi-Year Agreement Gives Naming Rights to Nation’s Second-Largest Wireless Carrier
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - January 30, 2004 - The Detroit Pistons organization has announced that the very popular club (formerly Covisint Club), located in The Palace of Auburn Hills, will be re-named the Cingular Club after Cingular Wireless agreed to a multi-year contract earlier this week. Financial terms of the new deal were undisclosed. The relationship was negotiated by Cingular’s sponsorship agency of record Velocity Sports & Entertainment, LLC.
The upscale club, located in The Palace of Auburn Hills’ West Atrium, will be officially renamed at a grand opening celebration to be held on Saturday, January 31. In attendance will be club members, as well as a special appearance by former Detroit Piston and radio sports analyst, Rick Mahorn. An eighteen-year basketball veteran, Mahorn was on the team that brought Detroit its first NBA Championship in 1989.
“We are delighted to partner with Cingular and happy to be working with them in what we see as a unique brand-awareness opportunity,” said Tom Wilson, president and CEO of the Detroit Pistons. “With their reach in the market and combination of consumer-based and business-to-business platforms, Cingular is a great fit for this naming rights agreement as it will put the company’s name and identity directly in front of their target demographic. Cingular has a great customer-service reputation, both locally and nationally, and we are delighted that this company, who has supported the Pistons for more than 15 years, will be taking advantage of this great opportunity.“
The new agreement with Cingular Wireless will provide all of the naming rights and privileges afforded the former agreement with Covisint. These include naming rights, branding on all paper products and signage within the Palace. Cingular will also have a display area within the club where members will be introduced to the latest product lines and services available from the wireless provider.
“Cingular Wireless is pleased to be affiliated with an organization that has been a centerpiece in this city’s rich sports tradition,” said Chuck Garlock, sales director of Cingular Michigan. “We’ve been providing wireless service in this city for 20 years, and like the Pistons, consider ourselves an integral member of this thriving community. We look forward to fostering a great relationship with the Detroit Pistons.”
The Club is a 17,000 square foot restaurant, built in 2001 by Statewide Associates and designed by BDG Architects. The Club combines state-of-the art technology with an elegant, neo-classical design including Turkish Travertine floors, granite buffet surfaces, solid cherry veneer, soaring archways, and a cascading water wall. Gourmet strolling buffets offer both hot and cold entrees, hors d’oeuvre platters and pastry dishes. Fine wines and premium liquors are available at three separate bars, a cigar lounge is available for cigar aficionados and 33 television monitors give members and guests access to all the action throughout the evening. The dining room centerpiece consists of a marble display kitchen set around an imported Italian pizza oven.
Members of the club, which number just over 700, enjoy a multitude of privileges including reserved parking, private entrance with coatroom, premium club seating and members-only restrooms. Club members have the highest redemption rate and Club seats are among the most often used for Detroit Pistons games.
