Chauncey Billups And Lindsey Hunter Read To Metro-Detroit Students

Reading Time-Out: ’Yak’-ing it Up at The Detroit Free Press

The Detroit Free Press’s mascot, the Yak, hosted the Detroit Pistons and Shock, along with 75 metro-Detroit students for a special Yak-themed Reading Time-out at the Detroit Free Press on Thursday, March 11.

The students, from Pontiac and Livonia School districts, were able to hear stories from the Yak's Corner, a children's section of the Detroit Free Press and special Yak-themed books. Each student listened attentively as Chauncey Billups, Lindsey Hunter and Merlakia Jones of the Shock read books and the newspaper sections to them, celebrating the Yak and National Reading Month. Students also had the opportunity to receive a special tour of the Free Press from Free Press staff members such as Cathy Collison, Thom Fladung, Gene Meyers, Ron Recinto and Dave Robinson.

Additional members of the Detroit Pistons All-Star Reading Team, including Detroit Pistons broadcaster Mark Champion, WDFN’s Jamie Samuelsen, FOX2’s Jennifer Hammond, WDIV’s Bernie Smilovitz and WCSX’s Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison were on hand to share their love of reading with the students in attendance. Each attending student received a gift bag with a special treat from the Yak, a poster, a new book and special Read to Achieve giveaways.
