Feed the Children Truck Deliveries

The 2009 Pistons Care Telethon on March 11 raised more than $450,000 in pledges to benefit Feed The Children, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Michigan families in critical need of food and basic necessities.

“We are so grateful for everyone at the Pistons organization and those who participated with the Pistons Care Telethon,” said Larry Jones, founder and president of Feed The Children. “It was recently reported that the number of Michigan children living in poverty has reached nearly one in four. Because of the tremendous support from the telethon, Feed The Children is able to deliver many truckloads of food to Michigan children and families who are in need.”

The pledge total will allow FTC to make 60 truck deliveries statewide to organizations such as Detroit Rescue Mission, Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, ChildHelp USA in Southfield, the Macomb Food Program in Mt. Clemens, Orchard’s Children’s Services in Flint, Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Saginaw and the Salvation Army in Jackson. Each semi-trailer is stocked with enough food and personal care items to sustain 400 families for up to two weeks.

The first truck delivery was made in Flint on May 9, with all 60 deliveries happening by December 2009. Players and coaches from the Pistons and the Shock will occasionally be on hand to help with the distribution. Pistons assistant coach Pat Sullivan attended the inaugural stop in Flint, and the entire Detroit Shock team took part in the Traverse City delivery May 29.
