Tell the Pistons, Shock and Rock Financial what Black History means to you

"Know Your Black History Tour" Scholarship Contest

For the past two years, the “Know Your Black History” scholarship contest has given high school students an opportunity to express what black history means to them via poetic, artistic or literary expression for the chance to win a $1,000 college scholarship, courtesy of Rock Financial.

“It is very important for kids to know their history,” said Shock assistant coach and Pistons legend Rick Mahorn. “The tour engages students to learn and also helps brighten the future of those who won scholarship money.”

To win the scholarship, however, you had to be one of the students at one of the four tour stops on the “Know Your Black History Tour with Rick Mahorn.” This year, the Pistons, Shock and Rock Financial have expanded the scholarship contest to accept entries from students anywhere in Michigan. To learn more on how to enter, click on the “Contest Rules” link in the Related Stories box. Entries will be accepted between Feb. 1 and Feb. 22.

One online winner will be selected to receive a $1,000 college scholarship and be honored alongside the other four scholarship winners at halftime of the Pistons game against the Seattle Sonics on Mar. 4.

Below are the videos of performances from the 2008 tour stops. Patrick McInnis, the chief learning officer and president of Quicken Loans, the parent company of Rock Financial, said selecting the scholarship recipients hasn’t been easy for the judges.

“It’s a talented group of young kids,” he said. “It’s so difficult as a judge to sit there and try to pick one over the others because they all in their own right have something very creative in the way of a speech or dance. I think it’s an opportunity for them to live their culture, speak their culture and I’m very excited for these kids. They become role models to their peers and I think that’s what’s most important about black history. History’s history. It’s what you do with that history that really makes a difference in society.”
