Chuck Daly Chat Transcript
In 1983 the Pistons hired Chuck Daly as coach. In nine season with Detroit, Daly led the Pistons to a 467-271 record and back-to-back Championships in 1989 and 1990.
Daly was also elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994, and led the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1992.
Daly took a quick break from his busy game day schedule to sit down and chat with Pistons fans on Friday, April 29. See Daly give color commentary on WB20 Detroit during Game 3 of the first round series between Detroit and Philadelphia.
Chuck Daly: Hello, I'm Chuck Daly, former Pistons and NBA Coach. Tonight I will be replacing Bill Laimbeer as a color commentator on the WB20 Detroit network for Game 3, and I get to work with George Blaha. It's a little bit like when I left Punxsutawney High School, and I went back several years later, I noticed that the house I used to live was inhabited by a ground hog.
Saginaw: What is your most memorable moment with the Pistons? Jason Williams
Chuck Daly: I'd have to say the two championships. There's nothing like being involved with a team that can go that distance. The two championship years were that significant for me.
Bryant (Shelby Twp): Mr. Daly, How did you get the nickname, "Big Daddy Rich?" Best of luck on your broadcast with George Blaha tonight!
Chuck Daly: "Daddy Rich" was a name attached to me by John Salley, the humorist who is doing the Best Damned Sports Show on Fox Sports Net. Basicaly, it was because I was making no money. My shoes were shined on top, but had a hole in the bottom.
TC (Ferndale): Do you prefer the short shorts or the long shorts?
Chuck Daly: Somewhere in between. I thought the short shorts were too tight and restrictive. The long ones are a bit too much, so somewhere in between.
Ben S. (Ferndale): Do you miss coaching?
Chuck Daly: To some degree. I know I couldn't do it anymore. I'm still totally involved. I watch most of the games on TV, I've done some consulting work for a number of teams, so I get to stay close to it. I do some broadcasting and speaking as well.
Jason (Garden City): What do you think the Detroit Pistons are doing best in the Playoffs so far?
Chuck Daly: I think the Pistons have such a well rounded team, which is why they're so successful. All you have to do is look at the stats defensively and at their rebounding and scoring.
Jenna (Detroit): After leading Detroit to back-to-back Championships in '89 and '90, what do you think it will take for the Pistons to go back-to-back again?
Chuck Daly: I think in order to repeat, in will be an emotional ride and whether they can remain focused through a lengthy six weeks to the championship.
TS (Berkley): What do you think of Darko?
Chuck Daly: Darko has a tremendous upside. He's also very, very young. I think he has the tools to be a great player in this league; it's just unfortunate that he's playing for a team as deep as the Pistons.
Tim Cole (Adrain): Chuck, You were a great coach in Detroit. You did a great job with the players you had. Who was your favorite player?
Chuck Daly: I've had too lengthy a career and coached too many players to make a choice. Though I'd have to say it was generally the guys in Detroit, as a group, that won the two Championships. They were terrific and I always look back very fondly.
Chuck Daly: Sorry I have to cut it short; I have to get to practice and prepare for tonight's broadcast. Thanks for all of the questions and again for your support!
