A native of Capital Heights, Maryland, Chris McCray was born to Shirleeta McCray and Chris Watson on May 27, 1984. A graduate of Fairmont Heights High School, McCray was twice honored by the Washington Post as a High School All-Metropolitan Selection in 2001 and 2002. When the time came to pick where to play college basketball, McCray stayed close to home, opting to play at the University of Maryland.

A four year contributor and eventual captain of the Terrapins, McCray was undrafted following his senior campaign in 2006. But, not being selected didn’t get in the way of McCray’s dreams – he later signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, appearing in five games for the team before being waived during the 2006-07 season.

After leaving Milwaukee, McCray opted to take his talents to the NBA D-League, to keep his hope of continuing to play in the NBA alive. He joined the Bismarck, North Dakota-based Dakota Wizards, and became a member of a team that won the 2007 NBA D-League Championship.

The following summer, Miluwakee asked McCray back, to play on their 2007 NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas, but McCray wasn’t offered a contract for the season. And, McCray opted to play overseas, ultimately landing in Belgium’s Telindus BC Oostende, where he played 12 games in the ULEB Cup and 33 games in the Belgian League. For the 2008-09 season, McCray remained overseas, moving to Italy to play 32 games for Basket Rimini Crabs.

McCray returned to the U.S. for the 2009-10 season, joining his former team’s rivals and neighbors to the south, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. With the Skyforce, McCray appeared in 39 games and helped his team advance to the quarterfinals of the 2010 NBA D-League postseason.

While in the NBA D-League, McCray played alongside NBA assigned players Martynas Andriuskevicius (Chicago Bulls) and Nathan Jawai (Minnesota Timberwolves)

On the heels of a successful 2009-10 campaign in Sioux Falls, McCray played with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2010 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
