What the New Orleans Pelicans had to say about 95-90 loss to Indiana Pacers (10/30/13)

Pelicans Head Coach Monty Williams:
On the tough loss:

“They (Pacers) took the game. I just didn’t think that we had an understanding of the moment in the fourth quarter. Some of our possessions were just vanilla possessions where we just jacked up a couple of shots that the guys who took the shots probably thought to themselves that ‘I could’ve got something better.’ That will happen. Once we understand the moment and how to play in those playoff type atmospheres (we will improve). I thought that that was like a playoff game tonight. We just didn’t have the execution in the fourth quarter that we had (earlier). We gave up 36 points in the fourth quarter. Up until then, (we gave up) 14, 22, (and) 23 (points). We were having a great defensive game and then we give up 36 in the fourth. That’s the game. Our turnovers weren’t crazy. Fifteen isn’t that high, but not as crazy as it has been. We just gave up too many points and too many empty possessions. For a young team, it is certainly something that we can learn from. I explained that to our guys. We are going to be pretty good once we learn how to play in those conditions.”

On the team playing hard:

“Our guys fought all night long. There is only so much that you can do in some situations. I thought (the bigs) did a good job of making it tough on (Roy) Hibbert. If you would have told me that he would score six tonight…Would you take that? I would be like ‘Yeah, we’ll take that.’ He is a load down there. Give those guys (the Pacers) credit. They played playoff basketball tonight. They didn’t panic when they got down early. I explained that to our guys at halftime that they are going to come out with a playoff-type atmosphere effort. They are used to it. We are not. That is something that we have to understand.”

Pelicans Forward Anthony Davis:
On how the team will play this year:

“We are going to continue to defend, push the ball, make good decisions on the break. We got better. We’ve been working hard all summer to get better. That’s what happens when you work.”

On losing the first game:

“It’s tough to lose any game. We had them, but in that fourth quarter they scored thirty-six points. We can’t allow teams to do that. We have to lock it down defensively and take care of getting the ball.”

Pelicans Forward Jason Smith:
On how the Pacers managed to come back to win:

“They were down. They came out after halftime and they played hard. They scored 36 points in the fourth quarter. We can’t allow that to happen. They played the night before, but that doesn’t matter. They are a playoff team. We’ve got to play better.”

On the depth of the Pelicans:

“We have a lot of guys that can come in and play off the bench. We have a lot of guys who can come in and help us. But as a core group, we have got to get better. We never want to come out and have a lull like that. We’re a very good team though, and we’ll have to get them next time.”
