What the New Orleans Pelicans had to say about 94-93 loss to the Wizards (2/22/14)

Pelicans Head Coach Monty Williams
On the emotion of the game

“That one hurt. Like I told our guys, there is no other way to put it. It just hurt. To do all that we did in that game, all the lead changes and to have it right there, it just hurts. Our guys are really stinging over that one because we felt like we did enough to win; just a second more, we just didn't have it.”

On John Wall

“He broke us down and your natural reaction is to go help. We could make up all kinds of reasons why that happened. If anyone, it was on me not our guys. They were trying to do their best.”

On Nene

“He was tough. He had a great game, but we held everyone else in check. You think that if [John] Wall plays that way, [Bradley] Beal plays that way and Trevor [Ariza] only scores four points you think you have a great chance to win the game. But he was great tonight, in the post and even running.”

Pelicans forward Anthony Davis
On the last possession
“They ran a great play. John Wall drove, gave it to Nene and he finished.”

On being close to winning but falling short
“I mean it is tough. It is always tough to win on the road. We gave ourselves a chance to win, kept fighting. We were down, we were up, we were down we were up, to come in close and lose especially on a play like that it is tough.”

On injuries playing a factor on the outcome of the game
“No, we have a lot of guys who come off the bench who give us substantial minutes and play well, so injuries are not a factor. Of course we would love to have those guys back but we can’t.”

On what Nene did to make it difficult for him defensively
“He just tried to be physical. All the guys did. They tried to load up against me, and not give me clean looks whether I was in the post, or on the perimeter. I see that is what guys are starting to do, just have to find a way to counter it.”

Pelicans guard Anthony Morrow
On the last play of the game
“It was tough. Obviously the last play of the game, John [Wall] penetrated and made a great pass, it just is what it is. It was a tough loss but we just have to bounce back from it and we'll be alright.”

On Nene
“He is a good player. I think in the second half, we just figured him out a little bit more but obviously he's strong and can finish at the rim. We have some guys hurt with more girth but we played him hard, we competed but it was just the end of the game--that last play. But that's the NBA.”

On Anthony Davis' free throws
“We knew the game wasn't over. We knew that in one more possession, you've got an All-Star like John Wall, good players all over--that's why they are in the playoffs right now. We competed, we just have to get back in the gym, watch film, get back to work and get ready for the next game.”

On the Pelicans' defense against John Wall
“It's hard to stand in front of him, no one can really stand in front of him but he made a great play, he made a great pass and he finished at the rim.”
