What the Hawks had to say about 105-100 loss to the Pelicans (2/5/14)

Hawks Coach Mike Budenholzer
On the game
“That’s a tough loss for our group. I think we were ahead seven or eight in the 4th quarter. Our execution needs to improve when we’re in that situation. We had a couple of turnovers, and then a big rebound on a loose ball that New Orleans ends up getting, and then (Anthony) Morrow hits a big three. That possession is really where games are kind of won and lost in the 4th quarter. Our execution down the stretch and trying to find a way to get that defensive board, even if it’s five or six minutes left in the game, are the kind of things that can change the game.”

On the play of Eric Gordon and Brian Roberts in the 4th quarter
“That three point play by (Eric) Gordon was a huge shot. DeMarre (Carroll) plays good individual defense, and Eric has a great pump fake. DeMarre bit on the pump fake and got contact and he (Gordon) banked the shot in, and that was a big play when we just answered on the other end. (Brian) Roberts made plays down the stretch. He (Roberts) made some tough shots. They just made a few more plays than us down the stretch.”

Hawks Guard Kyle Korver
On the loss
“We’ve got to give them (Pelicans) credit. We didn’t execute all game, I didn’t think. We played like it was the second night of back to back. We just weren’t that sharp. (There are) a lot of things to clean up.”

On not making enough plays to win
“Brian Roberts was big for them down the stretch. Their pick and roll game was good. (Al-Farouq) Aminu got loose a couple of times. Obviously, they hit a couple of big threes. That one three in the fourth quarter I thought that we had the rebound and it got tipped out and they got three. That was a big one. In the fourth quarter, you talk about making plays (to win games like this). Either you make the plays or you don’t.”

On the Pelicans’ bigs being disruptive tonight
“They have about five guys who are super long. They have a bunch of seven footers. Their guys were there all night.”

Hawks Guard Jeff Teague
On not making plays to win
“They made plays. We just didn’t make any plays in the fourth quarter. They made some big plays. (Brian) Roberts made some big shots. We just got stagnant on defense. Our intensity on defense just wasn’t there. We didn’t play with attention to detail in the last couple of plays.”

On what the message to the team was after the game
“We need to do better on the execution (of plays). We played hard. The effort was there. We just didn’t (do enough to win).”
