Ryan Anderson Blog
April 4, 2013

Hornets forward Ryan Anderson is providing periodic blog updates on Hornets.com, delving into many of his experiences as a new resident of New Orleans and other topics. In his fourth update, the avid movie-goer discusses films he’s watched over the past several months.

Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do. It’s so nice to be able to head to a theater, chill and relax. I even really enjoy watching the previews. When we’re in New Orleans, I love going to the theaters here. During our long road trips, it’s a great way to relax before a game.

So here are some of the movies I’ve seen lately, including my rating for each film, on a scale of 0 to 3 stars (listed in order from best to worst):

SKYFALL: 007
I really enjoyed it. I actually got really into Bond and bought the whole movie set after I saw this. I watched Goldfinger, which is supposedly the best 007 movie of all time, and kind of compared it to this one. They’re so different, obviously, with Daniel Craig as the current 007. He’s so different from Sean Connery. But I thought this movie really holds its own. And I loved Javier Bardem as the villain.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
I held off from watching it for a while, because I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it or think it was all that great. But people kept telling me great things about it. The story is so intriguing – there’s nothing too special about it, but it’s super well-acted and a fun watch about two people who are in not-so-great places, but just find a way to make it work together.

DJANGO UNCHAINED
I loved it. I love historical movies that represent our history, but also have something within it that is a happily-ever-after story. But obviously it’s Quentin Tarantino, so it’s not going to be super happy, because there’s going to be a lot of gore and blood. But I’m a big Leo DiCaprio fan, and Jamie Foxx did an amazing job. Christoph Waltz was awesome, so intriguing to watch. You just wanted to watch him; he’s such a great actor. The whole cast was great.

ZERO DARK THIRTY
This was a great movie. I saw this while I was eating lunch before a road game. It was a great story and a cool way to see an inside look at what actually happened with Osama bin Laden. It was very well-acted. There were some very suspenseful moments at the very end. Obviously, it was pretty clear what was going to happen at the end of the movie with bin Laden, but it still kept you guessing and there were moments that put a twist into the story. It was an action/thriller that I really enjoyed.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
I loved the new Wizard of Oz movie. My girlfriend Gia and I are huge James Franco fans, so pretty much any movie he’s in we love. He’s hilarious and a good actor, a fun guy to watch. He was great in this movie, and they had a great cast. It was just a really fun, adventure-type movie. When you first hear about a spin-off of a classic movie, you’re not really expecting something that good, but it really was. I think it really surprised us, how good it was.

SIDE EFFECTS
I went to this with Jason Smith, his fiancé and my girlfriend at the Canal Place dine-in theater, which is one of my favorite places to watch movies. It was really good. It was very suspenseful and had a big twist in it. It was a great watch the entire way. I actually correctly guessed what was going to happen at the end. Those are kind of fun, when there is a big twist. I don’t want to ruin any of the movie for anyone, so I’ll leave it at that.

GANGSTER SQUAD
I came into it expecting it to be one of those classic, great gangster movies. It had such a great cast of actors, but it just disappointed me. I think they tried to play into the whole old-school, gangster, 1940s lingo, and it just didn’t work. My girlfriend and I saw that one together, and we weren’t fans.

THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS
This Quentin Tarantino-produced movie was not good. It was really awkwardly bad. I didn’t enjoy it at all. I thought it was going to be good based on the previews. I was really excited to see it, partly because I love kung-fu movies or movies about some kind of mystical power, but this was just bad.

MOVIE 43
The worst I’ve seen in the past year. It had Halle Berry, Dennis Quaid and all these great actors in it. But it was awful. It had all of these different movie shorts, but they were all really awkward. There was no moral to the story, no plot. It was just sporadic things that were awkward and not that funny.
